which locker do you guys like for 8"?
i do mostly street driving on 35's, still has stock gears im planning to regear in the very near future, and would like to upgrade the diff while im at it.. and then do the front some time in the more distant future but ill stay IFS for a while.
so i do mostly street driving with the occasional mud hole and minor offroad stuff.. i dont get too crazy just have a little fun. i cant afford for this thing to be broken all the time so i dont push it too hard but stil have a blast!
so what locker/diff would suit my needs? im on a budget.. an 850$ ARB plus compressor is not a budget item IMO.
tire wear IS a concern!
if i were to get say a detroit tru trac, how well would it do when one wheel was completely useless(no traction)?

i have a powertrax in my 9" ford in the truck in my sig.. EFFIN BLOWS
it has to be the worst locker ever made.. but then again it was installed back in like 2002 and to me it seemed like they were new on the scene then.
it drags tires around turns. pops and pings and bonks etc. at random times. and because of the sometimes lack of ability to unlock, it wears out rear tires in 10K miles regardless of how i treat them.. tires that have a 40K mile rating. (the nitto SUV tires like the 404s or something) 305/60/17
i mean the truck blows the tires off to the point of creating tire shake but still.. used to think it was axle wrap and wheel hop till i 4-linked it and watched the tires in slow mo

I have a LockRight in mine. It does bark the tires when you get on it in tight turns and in parking lots. On the freeway, it is invisible, just rolls right along. For the money, it works great.
If I had infinite fundage I would have an E-locker in the back (really not that much more money) and an ARB air locker in the front.
I have a LockRight in the front also. The steering is a bear on the trail, constantly fighting the wheel. But, the traction is amazing.

Unless you use a selectable locker you are going to wear out tires faster, simple physics.
I prefer an ARB.
Cheap locker is to weld it up or do a spool and have the worst characteristics. The more in price the nicer they get in handling on road.
There a bazillion threads on here about lockers so do some searching and reading.

From what I read on here it is either ARB air locker, Detroit locker or and Aussie locker.
Question, did Aussie ever get their butt into gear and create a V6 locker yet? I haven't checked in years.

I talked to them last week about ifs aussie locker, and started asking questions. They have around 100 v6 aussies sitting there, and they are expecting another shipment of 200 or so of them. It has been out 6months in australia and testing has gone great. They are waiting on install instructions/pictures so they can start selling them.

IMO, it's a bad idea to only re-gear the rear for now. 1st, you won't be able to use 4WD until you do the front. Since you're thinking about getting a locker, you want more traction offroad so you can do more w/ your truck right? Then why would you want to disable your 4x4? Not only that, if you ever let someone borrow your truck and forget to tell them and they put it in 4x4, say goodbye to your transfer case.

If you were talking about re-gearing the front and rear at the same time and only doing a locker in the rear for now, that's cool. Lockrites are cheap, but I would go w/ ARB (even though they're expensive) or an elocker retro-fit.

It's simple physics. You either pay for the selectable up front or pay for it each time you have to replace the tires early due to the accelerated wear caused by a non-selectable. I used to DD my rig with the rear Detroit and even though it drove just fine, I didn't like the accelerated wear on the tires. They get expensive the larger and more aggressive they get. While I still run the Detroit, it is no longer a daily driver. If you want a selectable, save up for it and pay for it once. Like I said, you'll still spend the extra money, but still have a full time locker.
