Does anybody know if 6.5in speakers fit in the rear doors of a 3rd gen? I know 5.25in fit with very little trimming, but I am not really sure on the 6.5in. Does anybody have them installed on their 3rd gen? Hope you guys can help.

I was wondering the same thing. I was told I would need to fashion a crude bracket out of something.

I've been wondering the same thing. With the big boys in the front, I don't even realize the dwarfed rears are on. I feel like getting a sub just to fill sound into the rear.

 

You'll need to build a bracket anyway for any aftermarket speaker in the rear. A 6.5 will fit. Whether or not you'll have to do some trimming of metal depends on the size of the basket of that particular manufacterer.

You can make the bracket out of anything, but the easiest to work with is wood. MDF, hardboard, birch, etc etc. Just make sure that if the wood isn't waterproof that you waterproof somehow like coating it in fiberglass resin. The second thing you have to make sure is that the bracket is sealed to the door, and the speaker is sealed to the bracket. You'll lose a lot of output and sound quality if it isn't.

It depends on WHICH 3rd gen.

On my 96 Limited, I had no problems dropping a 6 1/2" speaker right into the door. But, on a friend's 99 SR5, I had to use a Dremel to open up the sheet metal to get 6 1/2"s in her door. The speakers used in both cases were exactly the same... Kenwood 2-ways. The doors were definitely different.

I don't have enough information to say if the difference was in the year or that the Limited originally had the "premium" sound system in it.


Beyond that... In BOTH cases I had to create a 1/2" spacer out of MDF to fit between the speaker and the door. Without it, the rear window wouldn't roll down all the way. And in fact, I found this out when one of my windows stopped rolling down all together because the window had popped off the track from repeatedly hitting the back of the speaker. oops.

This was only an issue on the rear windows in both trucks. The front ones have enough clearance.

You're right about the front, I fit in 6 1/2.
rear? I have no idea, i'm wondering if they sell spacers at cartoys or any retail stores? fitment seems to be no problem at all but bolt pattern does not match up. Factory(4") has 3 bolt pattern but my new spkr(5 1/2") has 4. Help? anyone? BTW 4" factory speakers suck, they look like small doughnuts!
