4.88 or 5.29

I've been thinking about regearing for a while, but I'm not sure which way I should go. My main issue is being able to maintain speeds up hill, but more highway speeds than in town. Please oh wonderful gurus, help me. I did search but couldn't really get anything solid as to which is better for what. For anyone who knows the drive from the Maricopa Valley to Flagstaff or Sedona where my favorite wheeling trails are is quite a drive and the 4R isn't loving the drive.

I am running 33x12.5x15's with 4.88's in my Yota and it does pretty decent on the Interstate. My average rate of speed is approx 70 (even though the speedo only shows 55-60) according to my GPS. It also does pretty good on the trail. I have thought about going to 5.29's but believe I will add a doubler instead to give more options rather than taking the chance on spending all that money to re-gear front and rear and end up dissatisfied. I will eventually go to 35's or 37's when I do my SAS, but with the doubler I am wondering if I will need 5.29's then.

I don't know that you are going to find the perfect answer. Your going to have to research the options and see what you think will benefit you the most for the money you have to spend vs. what your overall game plan is for the vehicle.

Thanks for the info. I know that 4.88s will do the job on flat land, i'm more worried about trying to keep up at 60-65 on a 5-8% grade.

Unless I missed it, you didn't post whether you had a manual or auto tranny which is important in making a choice.

Regardless, this topic has been beaten to death & it's really going to have to be a judgment call on your part.

I have an auto tranny, and I know I'll never go beyond a 33" tire.
Like I said earlier, my issue is more with being able to keep up speed going uphill. I'm fine with going with 5.29s if they'll do better than 4.88s in that respect alone.

I looked for you but didn't save the link to the information. For the auto w/ 33"s you'll want to bump it up to 5.29. But remember that even regeared tall hills are still going to slow you down. Just makes it better

I agree with an auto & 33's that 5.29's is the better choice.

Alrighty, I'm gonna go talk to the guys at Sonoran Steel this week and see what they say, I'm hoping they can give me a good opinion, or at least someone there has had or worked on a 3.0L 4Runner. Fingers are crossed.

I hated that drive in my mustang. I can't imagine it in truck/runner with bigger tires and stock gears. 17 north sucks, but its such a beautiful drive.

I know it. The mogollon rim has so many nice trails, but I can't really get up there right now. I'm willing to lose a little mileage if it means I can get up there in decent speed.

my 22r with 4.88s and 33's still pulled 120km/h in 4th up a fairly decent hill that stops most big rigs and some ty 4cyl cars.. Now that I have 31's it tears even better, I can cruise up the hill doing 100-110km/h in 5th. But the revs at a constant speed are annoying.. around 3500rpm for 100km/h

This is based on Jeeps, while they won't tell you that that's where the chart originated from. I'm actually in the same boat but a 3rd Gen Runner and auto 3.4L V-6.

22R (carb) with 260 cam on 37's and 5.29's. I cruise the highway around 65-70ish in 5th and up mild hills, anything with a decent grade i drop it into 4th and i can maintain those speeds at around 3400rpm. ... RPM's average is around 2500-3000 5th gear depending on where in the 60mph range i want to be.

Works good for me =)
