Exclamation I need some help!!! 1991 pickup v6

I have a 1991 toyota pickup with the 3.0L V6 4WD automatic and it is need of some balls i have been looking for supercharger and or turbos and i cant find anything at all does anyone know where i can find one or anything that will bring up the horse power? thanks all!!!!

Not gonna happen unless you're spending ridiculous amounts of money dude. I've come to learn to live with the utter lack of power these motors make.

i would love to do the engine swap but college and flight school are too pricy.....if ya all know what i mean but the good news is that the engine only has 80k original miles on it and i have tires ordered haha look that the 12" tires on it now looks like elmer fud's truck do ya all think 30"s will be good enough? also what brand do ya all recommend as far as tires ?????


Also how many ponies would i get out of cold air and exhaust? i am just curious

The K&N website states that the FIPK adds 3.32 HP at 4405 RPM. I found mine for about half price, but haven't noticed an increase in performance or mileage for the most part. The sound is nice though.

Don't bother with a "cold air" intake. Waste of money & time. The K&N filters let HUGE amounts of dust/debris into the intake which will grind away the engine internals over the miles.

Exhaust upgrades CAN yield MINOR increase in HP, but definitely not worth the investment. Keep it properly tuned & maintained is your best bet.

Have you checked for engine codes? Is it exhibiting any particular behavior you believe to be outside normal parameters?

well what about performance chips? would those be as pointless as the cold air and exhaust?

Yes. I'd say do a good tune up - plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, air filter(OEM or similar), fuel filter, oil change with full synthetic fluid, differentials fluid change with synthetics, transmission fluid change, transfer case fluid change, re-pack your wheel bearings, top up all fluids etc. If you do all that it will give the truck better throttle response, gas mileage and you might gain a few ponies on the butt dyno. Also, take any unneeded crap that you might have in the truck, as more weight will make the truck slower.

There's also a huge thread right now pertaining to the ISR/silencer mod for the intake system, some guys thought they gained some power, others disputed that. You could go into that route, but I'm still not sold on the benefits of it, although the motor does sound pretty mean without those things.

Some guys also remove their cat converters (such as I), and replace their mufflers with a "performance" one. This is also a pretty cheap mod; I noticed a little bit more high end power, although this could also be attributed to the fact that my cat was clogged as all hell.


Overall, these motors aren't exactly powerhouses, but doing a good tune-up and a couple simple mods can make them much more enjoyable.


Edit: Regarding the tire issue, I'd say go with a decent set of 31x10.5 All-terrain tires for a a balance between gas mileage, looks, power and off road performance. Do you happen to know what your axle ratio is? If you don't, look on the tag on the B-pillar on the drivers side door, and post up what it says under "axle code." You might have either 4.56 or 4.88, which is a decent ratio to run with 31" tires and an automatic as far as I'm concerned.

alright i will get that size ya and the ratio was 4.88 so i will go with the 31's only bad thing was that when i went to drain the rear diff fluid it was coming out in clumps i seriously think that its never been changed but i have already noticed a huge change in performance but that and trani fluid is all i had time for today

i have also been looking at electronic super chargers looks like some people say they work and some dont so i dont know what to go with???

Ouch, what type/weight of fluid did you put in the diff after? I'd be concerned about the whole "clump" issue. If the rest of the vehicle was maintained like your rear diff, I think you'll be in for a pleasant surprise when you do an entire tune up.


Electric superchargers do not work, waste of money. Don't even consider doing it.

if you can afford it, headers go a long way with the 3.0. They give a little bit of a kick in tha pance and do wonders for the longevity of the motor. eliminates the poorly designed cross over.
