Fuel leaking out of carb - lots of cranking

Hey guys, having trouble finding info on what can cause this. I have an 82 toyota 4x4 with 22r stock motor. The fuel leaks back out of the carb pretty quickly, like in just a day or two. Of coarse this makes getting it started a pain with lots and lots and lots of cranking. I have a new battery but I don't want it to be this painful to start this thing. I saw the thread that suggested getting an anti siphon valve and put it inline but I don't know why I would do that since these trucks are made to function correctly in the first place. I would rather fix whatever the problem is. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks guys. jason.

sounds like the float or the spring on the float isnt connected. I could be wrong too.

Ok, the float. I looked up the info on that and it does look like dirt could have got in there and keeping the float from seating letting gas drain past or could be jet screw o-rings deteriorated letting gas drain out. I did inhale bunch of water into the carb and truck ran like crap so I put seafoam in gas tank and cleared it right up but maybe it finished off an o-ring or there is some dirt still in the carb. I tried spraying carb cleaner in the carb a couple of days ago and no change. After a couple days float bowl is empty. I guess I should just rebuild the thing but I'm a little afraid of pulling the carb apart. Can I get a look at the float without getting into a mess?

Could be one of two problems. Is fuel continuing to run into the engine after it is stopped? or is fuel running back to the tank ?
If fuel is flooding the engine after it is stopped it could be your fuel cut off solenoid (if you have one) or the air bleeds on the carb are clogged and drain your fuel bowl thru a siphon effect.
If the fuel is running back to the tank there's a leak in your fuel line.
If you put a straw in water and put your finger over the end the water will stay in the straw when you take it out of the water until air is leaked past your finger and then it will run out, your fuel line works the same way.
if the leak was after the fuel pump it would spray out and be easy to find. The pump diaphragm may have a pinhole in it, or the line has a pin hole and it breaks the siphon allowing fuel to drain back.

Thanks, that is helpful. It's not flooding the engine. I was assuming the gas was running back to the tank. I dump gas directly into the carb to get it fired up so I don't have to crank it for 5 minutes. I didn't think of fuel line leak breaking the siphon. I did have the gas tank out of the truck when I was fixing the frame. I broke it the same day I sucked up all the water and got a bad running truck so the timing of taking the tank out would match up with when I started having the trouble. Maybe those squeeze type clamps aren't clamping tight or I broke the line at some point during the process by hooking and unhooking up the gas lines to the tank. They looking fine, not cracked or soft. Maybe I'll get lucky and try putting on some new clamps.

Well, I replaced the fuel lines at the tank, and the line going from the top of the fuel pump to the carb and no luck. So now all of the fuel lines are nice and tight with screw clamps. My next thought before looking into the carb itself is to blow out the vent lines from the fuel tank. I had previously had issues with gas being forced out of the gas cap on hot days when the tank was full so I'm thinking the reverse could happen when the tank is cool and empty with the volume shrinking when cool and with no vent sucking on the fuel line. I did pull off the accelerator pump and the rubber was in good shape. I will check the fuel pump also. Any other ideas before I tear into the carb? Thanks.
