92 Pickup Universal joint/Driveshaft removal

I need to replace my rear u-joint and notice it had a Velocity or Cardan joint in the middle, I have searched on here for about 2 hours but haven't found anything specific on my question, but, does this unbolt at the velocity joint to remove the rear section to the drive line, or do I unbolt at the trans and remove the whole thing? I am wanting to work on it out from underneath the truck because of the banging needing to be done. I did this once before at a friends garage and we just unbolted from rear end and used cutting torches to get the old u-joint out. took 20 minutes I guess, (had to look for another grease fitting, other poped out). Hey, thanks for all the help/info on here to, this site is really great.

Hmm.. never heard of a cardan joint on the rear of a 4wd.

Anyways the best way i've found to do it (with the cardan joint) is remove the whole driveline at the flanges on the tcase and axle. Remove all the clips and pound the joints out. I wouldnt torch them because the cardan joint has a rubber grommet in the center to keep dust and water out. You will light it up with a torch.

Oh, no, cardan in the middle of the driveline, but I see 4 bolts what looks to be connecting the 2 pieces of the drive line together on the trans side of the cardan. I didn't know if I could seperate the 2 halfs or I had to remove the whole driveline, but you say I can remove the whole thing so that's what I shall do.. thank you very much

xcabs have a 2 piece rear shaft with a cv. you can remove the whole thing, or the section you need. you'll have to remove the clips as stated above, and either pound out the caps or press them out. I use a ball joint clamp.

It's the rear joint. So basically I can remove the 4 bolts from from the rear, and from there does it slide out of a yoke from the cv, or do I remove those 4 bolts that is on the cab side of the driveshaft and remove? thanks.

Just remove front 4 bolts holding the shaft to the tranny and 4 bolts holding it to the rear end.

Slide it out and lock it in a vice.
Pound out old caps and install new.

Jay351, it's a 2 piece shaft, slowboost I think is right but I didn't know if I removed the 4 bolts in the middle to remove the rear part of the shaft or not, I read that someone did that and messed up the cardan, so I took it and someone replace it for me for $60. It's probably really easy to remove but I could not find more details on how to remove the driveshaft so I caved in and let someone else do it. I did try to remove from the trans but one of the bolts was stripped and it seemed like overkill to remove the whole thing.
Thanks for the replies, this site is great.
