head bolts and new head

bought the head from a fella that recommended retorquing the head bolts after engine heats up to operating tempeture and then doing another retorque at 500 miles, just want to hear your thoughts. i also like to add question 'bout the retorque process is it just checking for the 58ftlbs or is lossing the bolt and retorquing the bolt completely over

The reason to retorque the head bolts is because when the engine heats up the gaskets settle in a little, so its just a good idea to recheck the torque. You don`t need to loosen the head bolt again, just check the torque.

Do NOT loosen the bolts. Retorquing always involves simply tightening the bolts again to the correct torque, never loosening. Yes, it is recommended that you retorque after warm up, and again after you've put some miles on. I've heard from people who retorque their head bolts every time they have the valve cover off.
