Hello, folks.

I have in mind a replacement of the factory cassette player w/radio with a factory CD,cassette and radio player in a 1991 toyota 4runner. Does anybody know what years of 4runners will fit the 91 player slot, where I can find a relatively inexpensive player and generally how the factory player can be taken out of the slot.

I know this may be a lot of questions but I'm no expert in cars (I am in aviation though ) and thanks a lot for help.

my suggestion is to get yourself a new simple CD player with mp3 capability and some means of USB connection. Look for the offroad audio thread in this section. Getting someone else's stereo that they've been beating on for the last 10 years just doesnt seem like a smart idea to me, even if you're being thrifty. I have, however, seen some pretty amazing stock head units out there but they are all pricey. McIntosh for instance makes some top of the line stuff for certain cars from the factory and those units are highly sought after and very expensive. Also, aftermarket head units come with a wiring harness that you can solder to wiring harness that matches the clip behind your dash so you don't have to cut, decode and splice any wires after the harness is made. See my build thread link in my signature for the install of my head unit, I have a good picture of what my wiring harness looks like completed so you understand what I'm talking about.

I say get yourself simple and kenwood (personal preference) with as few moving parts as possible. If you have a pocket under your stereo (as all do from what I've seen) than you can choose between a single DIN and double DIN stereo, and any of them will work with zero modification whatsoever. That leaves you with a lot of options, possibly even too many. Don't get a cheap used head unit only to have to spend 10 hours figuring out what the $R(*#@$ all of the $#*@$ing wires do.
