My understanding is that the program applies to new lease/purchase vehicles only, so no 3.4 for you, sorry.

"Clunker" is what the government calls the trade-in vehicle. It must be traded toward a new vehicle lease/purchase. Many other absurd rules, but that's the gist of it. The 3.4 is long gone, he'd be looking at the 4.0 today.

not a clunker

I am happy to hear that my 1988 4Runner does not qualify for the "cash for clunkers" rebate. I would hate it if they started crushing these (not to mention the loss of parts cars.)

It is funny, the 1988 4Runner gets too good of gas mileage for this program. Yes!

You are not going to get a cash for clunkers going to another 4runner...and the MPG on the 94, well it's just not good. I'd say check the net and I'm going to assume it's about 16mpg. Good luck with that one.

It's a joke it is, the whole thing. All they want to do is get you into another loan. Keep what you have or sell it out right and get something used. No need to get into all that dept right now.

These two posts answer your question.

Keep in mind, the government is referring to the "New EPA" estimates, not the ones that were on the window sticker back in '94.

Some people aren't in a position to worry about this crappy economy, but yeah I wouldn't go out looking to jump into debt just because of this program. If you were already looking it's not a bad deal, but car payments suck. I've had car payments almost my entire life and until I can be happy with one vehicle that's the way it's going to be, unfortunately.

I agree 100% I can't for the life of me see how people don't get it It's just a way to get you to give up a car/truck that is or most likely paid off and get you back into debt for another $30-$40 k for what $4,500 if your lucky and all the stars line up correctly for you.

Don't anyone remember when California tried to pass this same scam and people went ape about it?

Oh well fools and their money will soon part way's and in this time and economy thats the last thing I want to do is go $30 plus grand in debt when for less then half the CASH FOR IDIOTS I mean clunkers I have a brand new engine getting ready to drop in a very cool already paid for and fully modded truck that will most likely last longer then any of these new electronic you can't work on yourself STEALERSHIP REPAIRABLE ONLY wonder wagons that are not really going to make a differance to the envroment anyway when you factor in CHINA RUSSIA MEXICO and A FEW other country's t even if we tossed every car/truck and motorcycle in the country into the ocean and shut down every factory that made pollution you still will have these country's doing enough polluting to cover the U.S. and CANADA on a daliy basis four times over, it's a FEEL GOOD thing like AL GORE'S CARBON FOOT PRINT SCAM.

Yup...

The CARS Act requires that the trade-in vehicle be crushed or shredded so that it will not be resold for use in the United States or elsewhere as an automobile. The entity crushing or shredding the vehicles in this manner will be allowed to sell some parts of the vehicle prior to crushing or shredding it, but these parts cannot include the engine or the drive train.

I just saw this . their worried about the back log.
WASHINGTON (AP) - Congressional officials say the government suspended the popular "cash for clunkers" program amid concerns it could quickly use up the $1 billion in rebates for new car purchases.

The Transportation Department called congressional offices late Thursday to alert them to the decision to halt the program, which offered owners of old cars and trucks $3,500 or $4,500 toward a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle.

Through late Wednesday, 22,782 vehicles had been purchased through the program and nearly $96 million had been spent. But dealers raised concerns of large backlogs in the system, prompting the suspension.

Congressional officials say that the government suspended the program at midnight. There are concerns it could quickly run out of cash for rebates on new fuel-efficient cars.
