Who is the manufacturer of the stock brake pads?

I ask because I am looking for a set of pads for my 4runner, and am completely baffled at the amount of different styles/types/etc of pads these days. I had no idea there were so many choices and such a HUGE price difference between pads now....

I am, and have always been happy with stock pads, and was wondering if I could source them from someone other than the dealer by looking for them by the manufacturers name. I use a lot of online parts stores that carry MANY of the OEM Toyota parts (like the Ishino Hub "dust" seals for $25 each at autopartswarehouse.com I got yesterday...$48 each at my dealer...) for much less than any dealer locally or online.

I just went to napa and got some ceramic (spelled that wrong) pads for the front, ran me $50.

Anyone have any experience with EBC "Greenstuff 6000?"

They sound interesting enough, and are about the same price as my dealer ($60) for stock pads.

If you get there pads, get there rotors too. They go hand and hand.

 

www.autohausaz.com has "japan" OEM that are supposed to be good as dealer pads and tons cheaper. They have MUCH better stopping power than ceramic, IMO.

 

Aisin makes the pads, IIRC

 

hey bro. well i worked at a warehouse where we stocked pads and rotors, and frm what i can tell everything is the same stuff with different labels on them man.

for example i picked an order for say raysbestos and then for napa and we picked the same parts just for different stores and i mean everything even unkonwn brands we would just label the different and thats it ... lol

well i know i didnt help much but i guess my point is i would go with the cheaper stuff considering that its prolly the same just different labels lol.

 

DC's right. I'm 98% done with my front drive axles/new bearings, and manual hub install/conversion, and my pads say Aisin on 'em. The previous was anal 'bout buying and using factory parts.

 

This is not true. Most pads are designed to look like the factory since they have to function like factory parts. However, they are composed of different materials, attach to the pad differently, even have slightly different vent slots and wear characteristics.

 

I just go to Napa and just get there general replacement pads, and they work just fine.

 

i c ur point. but all im saying is that i figured they were all the same stuff since i physically put different sleevs/ labels on parts that i had just picked form the exact same pickhole. We even have a guy that all he does is take parts that come in napa boxes and dump them into raysbestos boxes...

for example on a CSK order i was picking id go to a pickhole to get a certain rotor, say part number 49-*****0 and i would place them on the pallet and place big raysbestos label on top of the box.

then on my next order for napa id go to the same exact pickhole get the same exact part number in this case 49-*****0 and arrange them on the pallet and then place napa labels on them.

 

Are the stock pads organic or semi-metallic?

Also, I cannot find any AISIN pads online that are made for the 4runner... Are you guys sure the stock brand isn't Sumitomo? They sure look like the OE ones.

Also-
My original pad shims are rusted and fell apart when I removed the old calipers, I see some brands of pads that come with shims, anyone ever use these? Do they fit/work properly?

You are correct Jason, I did not remember correctly. Sumitomo does indeed make the brake pads.

Gamer: NAPA, Schucks, Autozone, and many other aftermarket companies do indeed use some of the same stuff, albeit with different labels. My reference was more to OEM vs. Aftermarket, and higher quality Aftermarket vs. Budget stuff. Good point though!
