Long runs in the 4runner, not too bad.

In the last two months I've been making runs to go fishing in the 4runner. I'm talking 600+ miles for a one day shot(there and back). At first I was a little unsure if I should even try it. After several runs (sometimes I run 1000 miles a weekend to hit a trout stream or two) I can tell you that the best thing on the planet is a 1989 Toyota 4runner when you want to get the hell away from the city and find a nice quiet stream where you can have 30+ trout rise to a fly.....

And that rig carries 500+ pounds of camping gear, not to mention my fat 6'1" 190lb butt and my 90lb puppy. Hard top and all.

I would have never tried this in my Ford or my IH Scout II. The next time someone talks some mess about a durable rig....... send them to me and I'll show them a runner with 219,987 miles on the clock that runs where I want to go, when I want to go and how I want to go and does it at a screaming 24.2mpg.

Bad roads? Rough trails? Back up and watch, I run a Yota and I'm chasing trout in the mountains. Trail Rated? Get on a trail and get rated before you sport the badge.

Naw she loves me. I must have the only trail rig ever that gets waxed once a month and has an entire detail (motor/tranny/tcase/springs/axles and interior) done every other month.

Jeeps? I haven't ever seen one where I go. I did see a 70's Land cruiser this weekend though, he came out of a canyon that I couldn't have walked into. Tough rig.

Jeeps are made for malls......

Yup, I took mine out today and flexed and stressed and water crossed and mud bogged and rock climbed and.... Didn't complain once and cruised at 70-75mph on the way home. No worries!!

Trail rated, what a joke. My commute car is more trail rated.

Yeah, I'll give that to you. I had a spotter (cough, scuba, cough) back me up and get me stuck because he missed a photo-op.
Call me hopeful but if I can keep woking... um, working... long enough (no disrespect intended: I didn't mind the last wok'd dog I had), LSD's are on the wish list for my 4Runner... and (don't tell Sin91) an LSD is high priority for the 2wd.

Sounds like when I lived in Las Vegas. Lake Mead's a joke and everything else is way far away.

Make your own flies? It's cool to do. Buy a book on "How To". The uglier you tie them the better they seem to work.

24.2? Nice. I thought I did good this weekend getting about 21mpg going to my mom's house and 23 on the way back. I think 88.5 octane and staying under 65 helped. Its funny though I stayed under 60 going (21mpg) and stayed between 60 and 65 when possible on the way home (23 mpg)

What I do is run the mid grade fuel (I think it's 88), keep it at 65ish and I usually run a thing of injector cleaner through it at the same intervals that I do the oil changes.

I've been doing the same thing dude, no problems with my truck either.

Headlights are no match for deadfall... busted the plastic headlight adjuster thing when an arm-sized branch punched through the gap between the headlight and grill. Good thing for epoxy.

Got there at 4am after a 6hr drive

I arrived at 4:30am. Not wanting to unpack the truck as i was exhausted, I originally rolled out my bag under the truck, but it smelled funny and I realized my nose was about 4" away from a hot transfer case coated in steaming cow sht. Under a tree worked just fine after that. I slept like a baby for a couple hours.

Matt have I told you this week how much I HATE seeing those pictures? If not then you have been told.

Down here we walk streams and if we catch a Brown over 14" it is amazing. The streams here are usually less than 10" deep but the trout are fat and tasty.

I swear if I could drive from here to there I'd do it. I haven't ever seen a Rainbow over 16" (I caught that one) and would kill to have even one of those fish that you catch rise to a fly...

I hate you...... (J/K)

If you ever come up to Kamloops (couple hours north of Washington border), let me know... Last time I was out to those lakes, I hooked in to 10-20 15-22" trout/day. One fish took out all the line, and almost a hundred yard of backing in ONE run. I had to pull anchor and chase him. He was half the size of that big fish I'm holding in the pic.

Yesterday, I did fish a smaller stream and hooked half a dozen 12" rainbows about two hours away from Vancouver- pop: 2 millions. Pics later. BC is a fisherman's paradise

It did before I did the synthetic oil change. At that time the tranny stick and the t-case stick would be hot to the touch. Now they are pretty darn cool.

Man that's a long run from New Mexico down in the southern end of the US. I think I can make that run in the runner, it is a Toyota after all. I'll see if I can plan a 10 day vacation and come see you.

Toyota's and Trout.......... is there anything better?
