Buzzing Evap Canister - Part to fix discontinued

There are several threads about the buzzing noise that comes from the charcoal evap canister on the 3.4L V6s when the engine is off. I've had my 4runner for several years and this canister only started buzzing about a year ago and now it's really starting to get annoying because it will buzz sometimes for days on end.

All the threads say that people have been fixing this problem with a little box that you install between the hose and the canister which costs around $20 (part# 77701-35010). The problem is, this part has been discontinued. I've talked to several dealerships and they told me that replacing the entire evap canister is the only fix now. That's a bunch of BS. I'm not going to spend hundreds on a new canister, especially when I know this stupid little $20 box will solve my problem. So, does anyone know where I can still find this part??

My parts distribution center has it in stock if we order before 2:00 pm central time I can have it shipped out tomorrow.

My local contact had it next day also, not sure why they were telling you it was discontinued. No more buzzing!

As far as I know, Toyota has discontinued manufacturing this part. You might be able to still get one if you find a place that already has them in stock, but once they're gone, they're gone. I'd get one while you can if you have an earlier 3.4L. And thanks Jacque, you do rock!

The first time I tried finding this part my local dealership said no problem and had me drive 45 min. (each way) to them because they refused to take a credit card over the phone to order the part. So I drove there, paid for it, waited 5 days with no call from them so I finally called to see what was going on. They told me it's no longer available and said I could come back down to get a refund.

Not only did they make me drive an hour and a 1/2 already just to order the part, they didn't even have the decency to call me and tell me that the part was NLA. I had to call them after waiting almost a week. Now they wanted me to drive down again just to get my $$ back. I told them to pound sand. The manager then got on the line and apologized and refunded my C.C. over the phone.

Point is...after all this, I was told by 3 more dealerships that they could get the part in a day or 2 no problem and were more than willing to take my $$ right now. As I told them what had happened so far, they checked on the part and what do you Know...No longer available.

Jacque from trdparts4u.com was honest and told me right off the bat that he might not be able to get it, but would let me know if problems came up. Next day I got an email with a Fed/Ex tracking #.

I've got the similar problem, I'm heading to an auto wrecker today to see what I can plunder from a few tacomas they have. I am hoping I can find a Evap canister and that little box thingy that is on the firewall.

Were you throwing a CEL because of this..?

I fired up my truck (99 Taco 2.7) had a CEL, Drove 2 miles home and when I checked under the hood I heard the Evap canister ticking kinda..

I know I need to pull the codes first but its weird they kinda coinside..

No codes here. My noise sounded more like a bee was trapped inside the canister.

Hello, I just bought a 97 4runner and I'm experience the same buzzing noise from my canister. I know this is a very old post but I was wondering if you still might have one of those boxes that fixes it. part# 77701-35010.
Thanks.

I don't imagine you'll find one, but no worries:
It's an easy fix, you just need to make a little bit bigger air space- where that box would have gone. I used a mustard tin because it amused me, others have come up with much more civilized ideas. It does not have to be as big as my tin....even a lot smaller, like 1"x1"....

Another thing you can do is pull a box off a newer 4Runner at the junkyard, up to an 2000 iirc. Just look for one with a built-in box on it. More expensive to do the same thing.

The last and most expensive option is to buy a whole new box from the dealership. Not necessary if yours is in good shape other than the bee-cows.
