22re flooding on warm start

my 22re just started doing this, on warm/hot start like if iv been driving it hard and then turn it off and back on in less than 5 mins if it sits for 20-30 mins it starts just fine. but otherwise it floods, then i have to pull the efi fuse crank it over with my food to the floor and it will fire run for a second then die out plug the fuse back in and it will normaly start right up, somtimes i have to do this two or 3 times before i get it running, this only started yesterday. 89 22re

had a simular problem with mine. started fine when cold, ran and drove fine. when you would turn it off and try and start it when it was warm, it would start just like it was flooded (not as bad as yours). it was the head gasket leaking coolant into the cylinders. you could smell it when you first started it. my fix, I rebuilt the whole engine.

i have an fresh rebuild, and you can smell gas coming out the tail pipe if you keep trying to crank it over after its flooded. i'm thinking it might be cold start injector related, or maybe an bad coolant temp sensor. but looking for some advice before i start throwing money at it.

Pulling the EFI fuse keeps the ECU from injecting fuel via the 4 injectors. Since it does start even with the ECU not working implies you are running rich because the igniter will fire the plugs to start, but gives timing control to the ECU after the engine starts. Having a rich mixture at start up, cleared by having the pedal / throttle wide open, suggests that as the plugs fire the mixture will start to lean out and you'll hit a point where the engine will run but without the ECU firing the injectors, the engine will die.

Use a mulitmeter and check for voltage on the cold start injector connector when you're cranking the engine AND the engine is warm. If you have voltage on the cold start injector connector when doing this, the cold start injector time switch is likely malfunctioning.

Probably dealer only..

You can give Deathcougar a call at nix 99, He'll probably have a good working used unit for ya at a decent price..
