How hot does manual tranny get? Rear main seal problems??

Quick question for you guys w/ a manual, I noticed mine after driving 20 or 30 miles is pretty hot to the touch to where I can barely hold my hand to the gearbox. Is this normal? My fluid level is fine. I have an 86 SAS 4Runner 22RE pushing 36's.

Also, I was thinking my rear main may be going out, it only leaks bad when I cut the engine off, with the engine running it doesn't leak much at all. Is this a tale-tale sign of a rear main? I was hoping for an oil pan gasket, but its leaking by the tranny engine block interface and I cannot tell if its from the pan.

Thanks for the help!

Regarding the output seal, you will probably see oil all over everything near the rear of the t-case, including the underside of the body. Mine used to leak because it would get sprayed out onto other things, and then drip down from there a few minutes after I parked the truck.

well, i imagine that ANY tranny would get hot... there are gears in there spinning at thousands of RPMs and only some thick gear oil to cool them... like corax said, same thing happens with your rear dif...

Mine heats up the tranny tunnel pretty well. Even with a 3" bl and amsoil synthetic in everything..
