Anyone using a after market overdrive? Or anything else other than comon sence to get better MPG?

I notice that I save alot of gas when I dont drive. Haha.

But seriously, just drive easy, dont floor it when the light turns green and coast to a stop.

I filled up the other day and usually ill be around 70-80 miles when i reach a half tank, but im at 115 and at half a tank, mostly city driving. Just drive easy and you shall be good

 

One of the most important, but often overlooked, fuel economy items: MAKE SURE YOUR O2 SENSOR IS GOOD. If it has over 100k miles on it, time to replace that puppy.

im getting 70-80 miles per QUARTER tank... sounds like its time for a tune-up...

 

HOLY MOLEY! That IS some bad fuel mileage...I thought mine had gone to hell at 15 mpg....

 

You guys aren't seriously estimating his MPG just by the gas gauge, right? There's a lot of variance between one gauge to the next.

I get about 13.5 MPG in my 3.0 Auto and about 16.5 in my 3.0 5 spd.

To OP- I replaced my plugs and wires and get about 2MPG better than before.

 

22re's never got good gas mileage. That 4cyl is working extremely hard to pull that truck. Their mpg is about 14-15 mpg for a 4WD one at least 2WD trucks get close to 20 mpg.

 

I tell this story every MPG thread. I had a 1996 suzuki sidekick that was advertised at getting 27 MPG. I got about 35 with it. I always made sure my air filter was clean, my spark plugs were good, and I never had a lead foot. Make sure your engine is in top shape and timed properly.

I get about 22 MPG with my truck, but that was before I timed it dead on and it still has a lot of problems (O2 sensor bad). Im guessing once I fix the O2 sensor and catalytic converter it will jump to 23 or 24 MPG.

 

when my 2wd was stock, i used to get a constant 24/29mpg. i kind of miss those days, although i still probably get better mileage then most of you lifted 4x4 guys

 

dang... my p/u gets about 24mpg with 33's, my 94 runner with 31's gets an avg 22, both 5spd's.... my 93 auto with 235's however gets 15-17 on a good day. and I am no "lead foot"....

 

I might have to take the old 85 22r and make a rail buggy or something just to see what kind of mpg I can get. It has a lot of miles but it got great mpg in a 2wd truck with 2 people. And it was only a 4 speed. I just cant wrap my head around losing 50% of mpg just by changing to 4x4. I would try to lighten up the truck but the rust seems to be doing a good job already. Guess to start I will go with pizza cutter tires. We get a lot of snow anyway. Still no overdrive reviews?

 

My 86 stock with 307k on her averages 22 mpg in 2wd, about 13 in 4wheel high. Tuned to the bone- plugs, wires, air filter, O2 sensor, rotor, cap, dist air gap all maintained regularly. Coast downhill -the old folks won't mind.

 

I have 31" tires on my 22re with 275k miles and get on it quite a bit. She averages around 20 mpg. No complaints here. Kiroshu must have had bad experiences with 22re if his only got 14 or 15 mpg on the runner in the avatar.

I respectfully disagree. I live on a mountain side and work at sea level. I still manage to get ~17mpg in my heavy-arsed 4Runner usually carrying ~200lbs of crap.

I have gotten up low/mid twenties on the hwy on flat ground.

On the highway, keep your speed at 55mph (or the lowest speed you can do in 5th gear without lugging) and you'll see better mileage. Tire pressure did little to help my mpg, it just made the ride harsher.

 

I seen another site say " more power means more MPG" their thinking was just cause you have it dont mean you have to use it. And more power makes easy to stay at speed. So anyone running a v8 swap in one of these trucks and whats your mpg?

 

14-15 is not average. I'm getting 20 on average (in town) with my 89 22re 5 speed and yes it's lifted, in fact I filled up today and got 241.8 miles on 10.92 gallons. I don't run highway but I'm betting I can do better than 20 while doing it. In the 86 pickup (lifted) the best I ever got was 26mpg, average of 22mpg, again in town.


OP- Clean the throttle body, new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, adjust timing, clean air filter, run a Seafoam treatment and run a synthetic motor/tranny/t-case oil and you'll see improvements. You can also adjust your driving style. Leave a light with a light foot, shift in the power band and run a little slower on the interstate.

I drive like I'm running a timed qualification and shift upwards of 3500rpms and still get good millage, but then I bought these things because they are trucks and treat them as such.

 

im calling bs. on the drive back from vegas, i was getting 24. right now, with a bad o2 sensor, im getting 17.

 

I've had about 3 22re trucks all 4wd ad 2 3VZ-E trucks. The 22res all averaged about 13-15MPG and the v6s about 11-13mpg i dunno what ya'll are doin but yea. I'm not a freakin speeder either. Now i dunno if ya'll are refering to highway....? now thats a diff story i will admit the the 22re is amzing MPG on highway. I took a trip to tennesse in this truck and got about 370 miles to the tank all highway going 65 the entire time. now in the city i get jack garbage mpg i get about 2o0 miles to the tank. and thats been about the same with all the 22res i've had.... maybe some people don't know how to calculate gas milage.... the 22re works very hard under the hood and i know does not get great mileage its mainly advertised as high mileage....
