Grinding manual transmission

so on my way to work today i pulled the transmission out of fourth gear and put it in neutral. While in neutral, theres a little play in the shifter so it has some wiggle room. As i relaxed the shifter it started grinding as if i was grinding while going into a gear. I pushed the clutch pedal a few time s and a few seconds later it was gone. It hasnt happened again and i cant make it happen on my own. Should i be worried?

Well, I was trying to do it so I can narrow down what could be causing it. Was wondering if the clutch was disengaging, or if the shifter is getting too sloppy and I need to replace the shifter seat and socket.

well there should be play when in "neutral". but there shouldn't be much play while in gear. if there is then yea shifter seat and socket will do the trick.

If you've never replaced the shifter seat, and don't know when it was last, if ever, done, it's probably time to do it.

Never been replaced as far as I know. Is the shifter seat THAT important? I thought once it's worn away it just causes lots of play and sloppy shifting. It's not that big of an issue, right?
