W56 Tranny, how do the locking balls go in?

I'm trying to help a friend out over the phone. From what i understand he took the transmission out, put in a new clutch.flywheel and replaced all the seals on the transmission. or atleast the front, rear (where the tcase meets) and the seal behind the spacer in the middle.

He took the ballbearings and springs out, I think to do this.

he got it all back together then it wouldnt shift past 2nd gear.

He's hunting down his magnet get the balls back out right now so hopefully they're still in their holes but obviously they're locking the shiftter shafts where they shouldnt be.

I'm not tranny expert and neither is he. oh and now it wont shift in any gear.

Any help here? Can the balls fall through and into the transmission. From what i can tell on the diagrams they cant. They slide in and meet with a knotch on the shafts I presume?

In one diagram it looks like easch shaft has 3 holes, and the ball needs to be pushed in when the shaft and its hole are lined up properly. ... with the right hole.

help?!

i believe all those do is give you a feel for the gears. I'm not sure though.

anyway did he take just the tcase off? or did he separate from the spacer also?

reason I'm asking is becouse i had to take one apart to fix a gear, and when i put it back together it wouldn't go into any gear at all. my transmission buddy said that it has to go back together in neutral, something about the forks being aligned.

he took it apart to the spacer, but i do not beleive he took the spacer off and replaced the seal infront of it. He did what you did and just took the second half off.

and i think you are right with the neutral, thats how it looks in the diagrams. but the fsm is still very vague...

i wonder if he takes the steel balls out and wiggles the stick (its in neutral now) ..then replaces the balls they'll line up right?

i don't think so, we had to take it back apart and manually shift it into neutral.
