bad wheel bearings, or a groove worn in the axle by the seal.

Also the shims on the top and bottom of the steering knuckle center the axle shaft. If it's not centered, the axle seals will wear out faster. The FSM calls for special tools to get the axle shaft centered. I don't know how it's done at home typically. So just having the pre-load set using a fish scale is not enough. For one thing, add or subtract shims equally on top and bottom.

I just did mine, and I'm not sure if my axle is centered. I had to remove shims to get the pre-load right. One thing that will help is to use the Marlin inner axle seals. They supposedly allow for the axle shaft to be slightly off center. I hope.

Oops! My bad. I've heard that the front inner axle seals can be a problem too and they're way harder to get at.
