i just recently got a hold of an 87 toyota pickup and my timing is idling really high and my gears are really low. i cant figure out why my timing is so high and i plan to have my gears re done. what do yall think i should switch my gears to. i need the truck as a work truck as well as a truck i can take to play in the mud on some occasions. the engine i have in my truck is a 22r.

 

Usually I'd tell you to search, but you don't really seem to know much about engines so this time I'll tell you to go get your truck tuned up and also do a search on regearing.

 

Definitely search. There's only about 2 gear ratios people recommend.

There's a thread about gears created every week. There's enough answers out there already.

4.88 seems to be a standard ratio people recommend.

 

gear size is relative to tire size and if it's an auto or a stick
Get the truck running correctly first

4.88's = 33" tires
5.29's for 35" tires are the usual recommendations.

If this is a work truck with a rack, i would not go higher than 33" tires.
