hello...

Well, met with a certified toyota tech this weekend.. he was of great help.. He checked and adjusted my timing, rerouted a couple of vacuum lines that were out of line, and went over the truck, turned some screws and freshened it up quite a bit..

My question: when I bought the truck (95 4runner 3.0 3vze auto) it had the k & n cold air filter set up on it... well, I thought cool, more air flow, better performance... He tells me that unless I do other things to the truck to go "hand in hand" with the k & n, its not helping, but hurting the performance.. That the truck is not set up to handle that much air intake... ANyway, my idle is a little jumpy coming off acceleration and he thinks I need to put the stock air box back on to bring my performance back and smooth out the idle and overall performance...

PLEASE CHIME IN AND GIVE OPINIONS AND EXPERIENCES>>

All the K&N filters do is let some noise out and a helluva lot of dirt in. Unless you've modified the engine somehow to crank up the power, the stock setup will work fine & is WAY better at filtering out harmful particles. You actually have more filter area with the stock filter. I agree with your tech.

I've preached this a fews times. GO OEM!!!! Toyota Motor Corp. knows more about that truck than anybody they made it that way for a reason. keep it OEM and you will have no issue!

 

thanks for the input.. I agree all the way!! The k and n was on there when I bought it.. didnt think too much of it until my tech started telling me more... I have a guy with a 94 that wants to trade... should be easy enough to do in the parking lot, right?

 

There seems to be a lot of BS running around about the K&N filters. The younger ricer crowd seems to think they are the greatest thing on earth. IMO they are not worth the hassle unless you are running a custom high HP engine that really needs the extra air or a universal like the K&N is the only solution. When I purchased my Lincoln Mark VIII (32 valve 4 cam 290 HP) it had a K&N the PO installed. Well I switched back to the OEM air box & never noticed a decrease in power what so ever. Besides running the K&N filters under the hood only allows it to suck in hotter air anyways. Another example: My wife's 2000 Expedition also had a K&N installed when purchased, the entire intake upstream of the filter was dusty. That has gotta say something. I don't care for them myself. I'm keeping my Toyota intake OEM.

 

Also note, that those open eliment K&N cone filter setups will reduce your power. Since the stock airbox has a 'ram air' setup behind the headlight, it only sucks in cold outside air. Now with the open K&N filter, its sucking in hot engine bay air.

Not to even mention the K&N's lack of filtration....

Question: When I look at my buddys runner, he has two black boxes off to the side.. They are sitting on top of each other right by the airbox.. I think they are called resonators..??? When I popped my hood and looked at mine, I only have one black box by my k and n setup... Would this be right? Mine is a Cali emissions model, but I didnt think it affected the airbox setup... my fear is when I go to trade my k and n for the stock one, that I wont have all the OE parts..
any suggestions are appreciated..

I think you might be talking about the pair valve resonator...

 

may be.. I know on my buddys, both boxes had hoses coming in and out of eachother.. so I dont want to proceed without the right parts..

 

There is the pair reed valve resonator (looks like a triangle) and then there is the intake silencer that sits under the resonator.

You can junk the resonator but keep the reed valve resonator. Without you will get a horrible screeching sound..

Try craigslist. Post an add saying that you're willing to do a trade, stock for K&N plus a few $$$?
