I would like to thank you ALL for your posting... you've got yourselves a nice forum in here... its been very useful reading, but after a lot, NO solution but to ask...

I just got my first Toyota... PROUD owner of a 1996 4runner SR5 3.4 5vze V6...

It accelerates/runs FINE until 2 500 RPM, at that moment, complete loss of power, truck seems to "jump", tries but can not accelerate... happens when driving, when its idle "with some difficulties" can go beyond 2700 / 3500 and then same issue...

Notes:

- OBDII Code Error: P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor.

Comes and goes....

Repairs:

- Changed NEW: Time Belt / Water Pump / Cables & spark plugs (NGK)
- New OIL / GAS filter
- Used "injection cleaner" stuff
- CLEANED the MAF Mass Air Flow Sensor...

Checked wave length distance for camshaft position sensor with oscilloscope, tech guy said "voltage is ok"... DONE

Checked AIR intake..OK DONE... Prayed for a solution... DONE

Any ideas?

How about replacing the cam position sensor?

 

When was the timing belt done? Did this problem start happening around the time after... may be part of issue and timing may be off... or belt skipped a grove.... i'm thinking the cam sensor may just be bad or dirty/corrored... try taking it off and cleaning... if not then replace....

Time belt was changed less than I week a go.. previous look like new, Today I made a visit to the dealer... I am going to replace after CLEANING with no luck the camshaft sensor....had to order for next Wednesday...

Let see what happens...

 

I had the same problems a few years back in a 98 model. Ended up with a coil pack. I had one that was going bad, but really didnt do much till under a load. I caused a "bucking" while trying to accelerate or underload. I reved pretty good sitting in the driveway. If you have a friend with the same truck (running good), invite him over and swap out one of his coil packs, and then work your way through all three of yours.
May not be it.. but sounds similar.. I had no codes however!

The guys at the dealer make me a irresistible offer.. "$ 978 dollars + TAX to replace the sensor or the MAF, and check air intake..." L.O.L WHAT!?

So I decided to go step by step... already spend $450 in initial repairs, now $109 + $X install for the sensor.. etc.

IF you run the truck UNDER 2500 rpm.. you will never know whats going on... plenty of strength and power. If you try to accelerate or put some motor load... it "jumps" tries to but can not, stalls, and "Check Engine" light comes with the P0340 error.

Question? Where can I get a good cable/software to self manage/diagnose my 4runner?

UPDATE

For almost $300 replaced the Camshaft Position Sensor... at the dealer...

and not a thing happened... SAME PROBLEM~~~

NOW P0505 Idle Speed Control Valve/Motor... now i have to take my throttle body down. Any ideas about where I can find a good price for it? Auto Parts is asking $203 and de dealer... $987 !!!

 

Where did you have your tb/wp done? Did it have this problem before the tb was replaced?

 

stir_fry_boy thanks, There was no problem or CODE P0505 before the camshaft position sensor problem...

I felt bad this morning because of losing 300 bucks for nothing at the dealer... so I ordered the Mass Air Flow Meter 2225020020 and the Idle Speed Control Valve at EBAY (used.. let see if we have luck this time..) And I am looking for the best ODB2 cable + software to put more "hands on" the issue...

 

stir fry may be on the right track . There are problems when the shop does not use the updated torque on the crank. Pretty sure it is supposed to be 217ft/lbs as opposed to the original 180 or something. This has happened before. Search CRANKSHAFT PULLEY torque

 

UPDATE:

TODAY replaced Mass Air Flow Sensor.. little improvement .. RMP on idle went down to ~900 rest SAME...

The USPS / EBAY fairy brought today the Idle Speed Control Valve..

 

it may be in the previous work done on the timing belt i think they did not do it exactly right thus causing issue but maybe not.... try replacing the coil or coil pack i thnk the 3rd gen runners had coil packs... this can also be an issue.
