So as many of you may know, I'm getting ready to COMPLETELY rebuild the 22re in my 91

the timing chain guide on the driver's side is pretty much broken clean in half, and has been that way for, oh, well over 2 months or so now

make'n noise, but oh well... it's a little louder now though, lol

left Monday morning on a 200 mile trip to Miami for work, listening to the chain-slap the hole way

the veterin of 296k mile motor hummed along at 3k RPMs the whole 200 miles there and 200 miles back at 70mph + on the freeway, as well as around town in Miami, with no prblems what-so-ever!

I have to admit, I was a little nervous, and I was checking the oil at every stop to make sure I hadn't rubbed through the timing cover and leaked coolant, but nothing! but if I were to try and go another month or so, I know it's going to happen, lol

soooo, this Friday I will put that last road miles on the original built motor I'm going to be busy over the weekend, out of town, and I be driving my father's extra truck back so that I have something to drive around in come Monday when I begin tear-down!


I'm proud of the ol girl though for making the trip as good as she did It's like she knows... and now she's going to try to convince me to not do a rebuild haha, TOO BAD!

are you gonna throw the pacesetter back on when you are done or are you gonna upgrade? But I guess a new coat of paint counts as an upgrade, right?

yeah I think I'm just going to rough it up with some 60grit, and shoot it with some good header paint; not sure black or gray though



she started idling REALLY bad today like, almost dying at idle now, lol

AND, I smell oil burning now too after the trip

one more day baby, one more day; that's all ya gotta take me

and I'm driven the HELL outta the motor in it's last few trips, lmao; this motor's cry'n and cussing me out... but it'll all be better in a couple weeks

 

good luck. i just got done doing the top end on the 3vz and getting ready to do the rod bearings. i feel your pain (or joy) for me at least i enjoyed it (kind of) im sure you are the same type of toyota masochist

 

oh yes, I'm all excited about the rebuild; I've been waiting to do it for quite some time now, I can't wait

i plan on taking my valve cover off this summer and checking everything to make sure its okie dokie

 

EVERYTHING!!!

Getting a master kit from LCE with new pistons and everything, having the block machined and posibly bored a little, the crank machined if needed, then balanced and polished, and may have the machine shop I'm taking it to assemble the rotating assymbely into the blcok for me. Top end, I'm still tossing between just getting a decent cam from LCE and putting it in myself, but I'm kind of leaning towards getting a NEW head with OS valves and everything with a new bigger cam with it


oh and you guys can bet on the pictures; comon guys, you know me

not this weekend but not because I'll be working on the motor, but because I'm going over to my father's to spend the weekend with him and help him lay wood floor in his living room

that's also when I'll also be picking up my temporary ride, a 96 GMC Sonoma, which me and him built the motor for too it's a decent little truck, that'll WAY outrun my Toy, but I'm hoping to change that

I'm going to miss driving my baby for a while though 2wd Sonoma's are so close to the ground, lol

sweet! did she make it to 300k?...... i always get excited when its time to rebuild a motor, sounds wierd huh lol..

about balancing that crank. when i did my first motor i was gonna have it ballanced. well when i took it to my machine shop, he told me that they were pretty much balanced from the factory. like so close that it would be pointless.. id like to see what your guys say about that.

 

Bleeder got gumption....haha. I wouldn't a done it. I suppose the ride in the tow truck could be fun, but what if dude stinks?? It's the spit cups that are really so inviting, though. Wan' some chew, bubba?

btw, she's parked now untill the teardown; 296,012 miles didn't QUITE hit the 300k mark but she's burn'n mad oil now, idling like absolute CRAPOLA, and has no power, lol

and on the last drive home, she hit 5,500 RPMs + more than once it just won't die, even if I try to kill it but I bet it wouldn't last another week if I had to depend on it

 

well fella's, I came back a day early; thing's didn't go as planned for the floor laying that was going to happen this weekend

so tomorrow it begins, with draining the fluids, taking some pre-tare-down pictures, a little cleaning so the job wont be TOO messy, and starting to unplug all the electrical connections and vaccum lines and labeling where they go

so expect a new thread
