looking for a 1st gen 4runner

Hey everyone. I'm a new member but have been lurking for a while here. I had a 87 4runner SR5 in high school and it got stolen and was never recovered.
This was 14 years ago and I still miss that truck. I had more fun in that truck than in any other car that I've had since. Well I decided that enough is enough and started looking for 1st get 4runner. I want a 4 cyl 22RE and 5 speed as close to stock as possible. While I prefer to buy it from someone in SoCal so I can personally inspect the car, I don't think that its likely to happen anytime soon. Anyways, came across this in eBay. What you guys think?

I'm not too thrilled about the bedliner sprayed on the panels but I'm going to paint the truck black so it's not a big deal.

that looks to be a pretty good all-around Runner really!

I personally don't see what's wrong with the color or paint scheme, aside from the back cap being a little faded

that's definately a unique front bumper

but the seller seems to know what he's talking about for the most part; he really listed a lot of details

I garantee you that price will go up though... and the reserve's not met yet... I bet it easily gets to 3K...

welcome to YT btw!

Man that's a sweet rig!! Man I wish I had one of those...

I like the FJish grill/bumper thing!!

I wouldn't worry about the odometer, iamsuperbleeder has a sweet write up on how to fix that FYI!!!!

Thanks for the welcome,

I agree with you about the price going up to $3k+. Add around $1k for shipping to CA and it becomes more than what I'm willing to spend. We'll see how it goes.

CA residents, do you think I'll have trouble getting an out of state car to pass the smog check? I know it's not a problem with newer cars, but how bout the cars from the 80's?

I do?

oh yeah I guess I do don't I, lol

thanks!

yeah that's no big issue; if the odometer reading wrong bothers you, that's a simple fix and no it doesn't involve a drill, lol, unless you're too lazy to use just a screwdriver to take the dash apart

I really like the truck on ebay, but just don't know if i'll run into trouble getting it to pass the CA smog check.

what do you guys think about a car with not actual mileage showing up on carfax? Is it worth the risk if the price is right?

Let me get ahold of my buddy who is selling an 85 EFI SFA...
The motor burns a bunch of oil and needs a rebuild, but it runs..

And He's in the Los Angeles area..

Agreed.

Also don't be afraid to widen your search a bit. Parts of AZ, NM, and TX should all have some rust free stuff available. Here is a sample of AZ.

Also, with this economy keep an eye out for someone that is giving up on a project... which reminds me, I might have a friend with an '84. Good engine and body/frame but rough interior. I'll check.

Thanks for the advices. I should start looking in those states. Got another question, were all 86 and up 4runners sold in US certified for sale in CA? The only thing that really keeps me from going out of state is getting the truck to pass the CA smog test. If they were sold as 50 state legal then that shouldn't be an issue. Any help will be appreciated
