Exclamation HELP! Wierd situation after dropping in a 3.0!

I'm finishing up my engine, and go to start it and all of a sudden i heard a BOOM, and the cover I made for the EGR hole blew off, along with some black smoke, there is also smoke lingering out of the headers too.

After 10 minutes small amount of smoke is coming out of the EGR hole.

What is happening?!

Could this be a timing problem? Like bad style? I didn't time it, I got the engine as is.

It is straight headers. No exhaust till I get paid.

Dr.Pepper can, in the shape of the gasket for the EGR, with some gasket maker to seal it off, but it wasn't dry yet. The hole for the studs were the same size as the studs. And it was bolted down.

The O2 sensor has no flow either, but regardless I haven't turned it over for fear of something bad happening.

A Dr. Pepper can is way to thin. You should use something at least 3/16" thick if not more. I would say what you described sounds like an out of time engine. I would fix the block off plate first.

I am McGyver, I used blood to trace the gasket and my fingernail to cut it.

I just like how the engine had "Dr.Pepper" on it.

But really, I'll use thick metal next time.

I'm pretty sure it is backfiring. So I'll have to check the time right?

Could the dist. being off cause the same thing?

Tried it again when I got home. Again a BOOM and smoke, smells like something burning.

well... BOOM!, smoke and a burning smell usually indicates something's burning...
... or you should stop using cheap condoms.

but yeah, if the timing's off (too far advanced maybe?) you could get that effect quite easily.

Alright, ya got me I'm cheap, its just rubber right?

Maybe when I put the distributor in I wasn't at compression, I was 180 off, could that cause it?

I haven't forgotten your question, and I'm with Abe on this, it sounds to me that your timing is off.

With good condoms, you get the smoke and burning smell before the BOOM!

I'm off to check the dist. Any way to tell if No. 1 is at compression?

#1 intake and exhaust valves should both have 'clearance', i.e. you can fit a feeler gauge in between the cam lobe and follower.
