4:56 versus 4:88's

I am looking for some gearing advice.
I have a guy who is selling complete front and rear third members with 4:56 gears, For around $300
Should I go for the 4:56 or save my cahs and invest in a set of 4:88's?

My rig
87 4runner 22re on 31's 5 Speed

I don’t plan on changing the tires size and it will mosty be city and highway use. I'm looking for Fuel economy and highway driving while going up hill.
Will 4:56 give me a good bang for the buck? Someone told me it will keep the RPMs down and increas my highway speeds in 4th and 5th

I have the exact same question so some input would be helpful

also will the 3rd from a 4.56/88 swap directly into my 4:10 (22re) rear diff?

Yes as long as its 8 inch diff from a 1st to 3rd generation or e locker from a tacoma but that requires modification of the axle housing.

If you live at a significant altitude or want a better performance offroad but a little higher RPM's at freeway speed, go 4.88's. If you want stock performance and don't live at a high elevation go 4.56.

Thanks 89 silver PU
My altitude is between 800-2800. San Jose Bay Area CA. so 4:56 should work
Thanks for the advice.

What year Tacoma 3rd members with Elockers could I put in my 1st gen? And what is the modification?

To my knowledge up until '04. I don't know about the 5th gen rear e-locker third.

I'm putting in a '97 e-locker third in the rear of my '89.

Here's a coupld links to whats involved:

However, 1st through 3rd gens are plug and play

And I'm pretty sure the e-lockers only came in 4.10, 4.30, and 4.56 gearing. I don't think they came from the factory with 4.88's but I could be wrong.

As has been said before, if you don't live on a low, flat area and do a mix of city, off road and hwy, go with the deeper 4.88s if you have the 22re.

What would the rpms be with 4.88's at 65mph with a 5spd 22re? How about with 4.56's?

I do a mix of everything, city, hwy, some logging road style stuff too.

i have a 94 t100 3.0L 5speed with a gear ratio of 4.70 and at 65mph it screams at 3k... i was gonna go 4.56's but the motor has no balls and i bearly have torque with the 4.70s so i was thinking 4.88s but then id lose my highway speeds so i decided to stick to my 4.70s

Well I bought some 4.56 3rd members on Saturday. I guess I will find out on my own about the improvement. I live in a pretty flat valley but have to climb some steep straight highways to get out of the area. CA 152, 156, 680, 580, all of them are 65MPH.

The 3vze is just waking up at 2700rpm... It needs to rev. Don't be afraid to cruise at 3000+rpm..

I will let you know, don’t be afraid to ask me in about a week or two incase I forget. Right now I am trying to decide If I should put in a rear locker when I do the 3rd member exchange.
Major decision time…again. And that’s a big arse topic to cover. I think I will wait and save up for an E locker. The aussie thing sounds good but for some reason I want to be able to disengage at will.

hehe, yeah! My truck cruises at 3,000rpm at 70mph. I never go much faster then that though, my truck gets tossed around by the wind..

Don't be afraid to rev these engines. I used to go up a couple kilometer long hill at 5000rpm daily (22RE). Nothing bad ever happened, even made it to class on time once in a while.

One more question. I think I know the answer but I want to double check.

I currently have 4 cylinder DIFs . I can swap out the 4 cylinder directly with a V6 DIF right? Complete 3rd member without modifying anything.
