Could i swap a 90 4runner engine into a 85 4runner?
I found an 85 4runner for under $1000 the guy claims the engine just died one day
I have a 1990 4runner with no 4WD could i swap them? How much would it cost?
the 85 is in pretty good shape color red
my 90 is black messed up when ibought it,the folowing is wrong:
windows dont go down and up get badly stuck and cant get them all the way back uplol
windshield wipers wont stop
needs bumper top and bottom new front and back light (right side)
tie rod
grill
fender
back hatchback wont open looks glued shut HAHA for realll
pluss drivers seat is stuck in position lol a little too far back for me
so can i swap them? how much would it cost and would it be cheaper to swap then to repair the 90?

Then you have a 22re (fuel injected) the 85 may have a 22r (carbureted), If it has fuel injectors, then they should be right next to the block and have EFI engraved on top of them. The motor swap should be virtually bolt on in this case, if it is carbureted, then all you have to do is modify a little and swap out the mounts from your 90 to the 85. Good Luck Man

so what engins are in them currently?
im gonna bet the 90 4runner has a 3.choke, the worst toyota engine ever
and the 85 has a 22re, then it wont work, and its not worth the time, but if u got lucky and your 90 4runner has a 22re, then its easy and deffinantly worth it

so if this guy is wrong its carb which could only mean its actually an 84 not an 85? otherwise mine and an 85 would be the same?
meaning no modifications and if modifications just some parts off the 90?

okay he said its a 4 cyl just like my 90 is BUT mine is an auto (90) and the 85 is a (stick)
can a swap still be done? and with what modifications?

the factory offered carbs up to 89' in some areas. so because it's an 85 doesn't mean it's fuel injection. i had an 88 that was carb'ed. if the 85 is a 22re and the 90 is 22re then yes they will swap easily, some of the sensor plugs will need to be changed, but other than that a very easy swap.

I just swapped in a 92 into my 85 and I just took all of the 85 stuff onto the 92 motor and dumped it in. Runs and works fine. If I was to do it all over again I would have just bought a rebuilt one for a $1000, this motor has oil leaks and what not. I still cant get the damn thing timed right.......

there should'nt be any mods though. just swapping parts over.
the good thing is you've got 2 complete trucks to do this swap.
u just gotta' make a decision....
stick or auto
EFI or carbureted (if the 85 is carb)
