2003 4runner Limited Rattling Sunroof??

Has anyone else noticed some serious rattling of the moonroof on their 2003 4RUNNER Limited when it is closed?

It is starting to drive me nuts, and I'm just looking for any possible remedies before taking it back to the dealer.

Thanks

I believe there is a TSB that covers it. This thread (http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showth...=&threadid=631) tells you how to find them.

You know, I had what I would call an intermittent rattle coming from the roof/moonroof area. I never got around to taking it in to the dealer to get it fixed and when I switched to the Dueler A/T 265-70-17 tires, the rattle is GONE!

I had the same problem and it was driving me nuts. I spent hours trying to isolate the problem. The sound seemed to be coming from behind the sunroof mainly behind the driver's side, although I could sometimes hear it on the passenger side as well.

But to make a long story short I found the source of the problem. In the image below you can see a rod running down the outside channel. This rod's purpose is to move the air deflector when you exceed 55 mph and then go below 45 mph. This rod rattles inside that channel because it spans such a long area without any support. If you look back the channel towards the back of the truck you will notice a small black clip which supports this rod. To me Toyota should have put another clip in the middle of this span to prevent this rattling behavior.

What I did to fix the problem (at least temporarily) was to fill this channel with a thick silicone grease which prevented the rod from rattling within the channel. This is certainly not a permenant fix but I am still trying to decide what I could use that would isolate the rod from rattling, but still allow it to move forward and back.

Hope this helps in your situation and if you have any questions let me know.

BTW I bought this up with my dealer and they said they were able to use this solution to fix several 4Runner's which they were unable to fix previously. Hopefully they will pass this on to Toyota so they can make a proper fix to this situation.
