My fuel gauge only reads full when I fill up and shortly after starts slowly moving down and up, then down and eventually reads empty.

I have an 87' 4runner, 22RE. Is it the sending unit? If so, where is it located and can I get to it through the access panel under the back seat?

 

Sounds like you have a bad sending unit, its located in the gas tank, remove access panel and you will see it.

 

i have the exxact same problem. when you fill up to full it says full , but after 3/4 of a tank it goes right to empty

Same here I just watch milage and fill up every 150 miles. I may replace my sending unit this summer.
