Intake Manifold pics

Hi there,
I'm doing a head gasket replacement on a 3.0 and I was just wondering if other people's intake manifold had the same kind of gunk in the chambers that mine does? If so is it just leftovers from the EGR system? Or does it mean trouble?

P.S. notice how the rear chambers of the manifold are clean where the gasket blew!

It is a combo of things, but mostly EGR issues. Its relatively easy to clean, just take some brake clean to it OR, take it to a machine shop. They will usually toss them in a clamshell cleaner for about $10-$20 or so.

Is it bad? Does it mean I need a new EGR valve and modulator filter?

Its very common on all engines with EGR valves, its a combination of the EGR and the PCV systems. If you have it apart clean it up with carb cleaner or Brake clean. Also check the back side of the throttle body.

I'd clean it. Consider how long you've had the truck running. How many miles it has on it. And this is all that's built up after that long.

Stick it in the dishwasher, and then use parts cleaner on what doesn't come clean. Okay, dishwasher ideas isn't the best idea. Just stick with the parts cleaner.

wow, I knew that was notorious with the 22re's, but I didn't know the 3.0's suffered from it to...

I already tackled the task a while ago of removing my manifold just to clean that junk out... 290k thousand miles plus a bad O2 sencor that makes the fuel mixture rich speeds up that build-up proccess
