Question Question for those who run Borla exhausts

Okay so I have run out of options for an exhaust. Can't do a custom exhaust because there isn't a shop within a reasonable distance of my house that will make one for me. So I am "giving up" and going to the Borla system.

Here's my only problem. I can't find the system for 2002 4Runners. Plenty of places online have the system for 1996-1999 4Runners but none for 2000-2002. The 5vz engine stayed the same all throughout out the 3rd generation's production, but I do know that some of the electrical systems were changed or added (VSC for 2001+, removal of manual kickdown cable, throttle and cruise control cables) but does any of this matter when it comes to a cat back exhaust? Why wouldn't that system (14659 is the part number) work on my 2002?

I can buy it right through the dealer, which I'm positive would be an exact fit, but it'll set me back $750 if I get it through them. Already found a place that will install any catback for $70 flat, I just need to find the damn thing at a reasonable price! I see numerous Borla systems online for the $550-600 range which is somewhat more reasonable, but can I buy the exhaust that "says" it will only fit on a 1996 to 1999? Thanks for your input.

I believe it had to do with 96-99 having a single cat and 99+ having dual cats. You state emissions requirements would be your only constraint. Maybe someone can chime in for clarification?

There's always Jardine...

Jardine was recently discontinued unfortunately. Too bad I only found this out after placing my order and expecting my Jardine (or Doug Thorley) for over a week, only to hear it had been discontinued...

Hmmmm...they sure aren't giving the late 3rd gen owners many options huh.

You might just be better off finding a exhaust shop even if it's a ways away.

Good news- found a 20% off coupon for any Toyota part, which brings my TRD/Borla exhaust to around $600 even. Im out on my way to the dealer now. Ill post up pictures when it's installed

Please do post some pics.

Also, let me know how you like the sound of it. My muffler's on its way out (rust is slowly eating it alive) and when it goes, I've thought about going w/ something else besides the same stock muffler that's on there now. I just don't want something much louder than stock...I'm not a big fan of loud mufflers.

Rock Slide, you can try seaching youtube videos for sound/video clips. It's not the best quality, but it gives you an idea of what you DON'T want (I'm not a fan of loud mufflers/rice sound either).

lol, yeah I already know the mufflers I don't want . Some of those youtube muffler videos are crazy loud for the type vehicle they're on. I'm getting too old to have a "glass pack" type muffler these days.

I was fond of loud mufflers in HS (on muscle cars & trucks for example), but now that I have a somewhat real job and wear a suit & tie to work, loud mufflers just are not my thing. I personally like the subtle tone of the stock muffler. It's a bit more "luxury" if you will (as luxury as my 4Runner will get anyway). Plus, it's much easier to discuss business w/ prospective clients in the vehicle too when you're not having to talk over the noise of the muffler.

If I can find a muffler that has a nice, crisp sound to it, that's just a level or so up from stock, I'll get it. Otherwise, I'll just go back w/ stock when mine goes out.
