Question 3.0 Valve adj. how much did you pay?

My 3.0 is loud and ready to get the valves adjusted but I do not want to get ripped off. How much did you guys pay to get this tough task done in a shop?

I called around to some shops in my area and all of them told me that they wouldn't work on the valves because it was the puck and shim design. They said I had to go to the dealership. I paid $700 to get all of them adjusted and it still ticks. I asked them if I was ever out of adjustment and they said that two valves were slightly out of spec. Sure as crap not $700 out of spec! I went back and told them to fix it but they just said that was a normal sound. I went to another dealership and talked to one of the top tech. He was really cool and said that I was hearing injector noise from the drivers side. The passenger side is hidden under the intake so you don't hear them as much. I just leave the sunroof open all the time and turn up the stereo so I don't hear it. If you are going to make it to the dunes tomorrow you can listen to my post $700 adjustment and see if it's worth it to you.

From what I have gathered they are hydrolic lifters (not sure though) and use a puck and shim system which is hard to work on. Plus they have to pull alot of stuff off the top of your motor to get to them. I believe it is around a 4 hour job. At least that is what I got billed for. And lets not forget our friendly dealer shop rates.

I did an adjustment on a friends 3.0 and it was a PITA. Not terible, just time consuming and there were only 2 that were very slightly off. It did not make any diff on the sound. Special tools (borrowed) were needed to get the pucks out. If any need changing, and assortment of different sizes are needed. Most shops don't want to stock an assortment if they don't do it often.

So it sounds as if its more than likely the fuel injectors making noise. Would a fuel injector cleaner fix them or is it a case of replace the entire injector?

The lifters are a solid design.. and it is a pain to adjust. You will need the SST to depress the lifter bucket in order to pull the shim out to check it with a mic. and you will probably have to order them.. You have to be carefull because too tight and it will burn a valve. and there is a very tight tollerance there. 4 hours to adjust is way low IMHO.. abd a great deal if that is what all they charged maherj..

BTW, go to my web site and under the "Motor Rebuild" you can get a good look at the valve train system on my heads..

Lee, I think your engine you did up there looks so good. Thats what I want to do if I keep my three litre. I want to run through it and paint it all up before sticking it back in. From the sounds of it you know your stuff and that engine is proof IMO. GG
