Where's my oil going?
I changed the oil maybe 2 months back. I checked it back to back days to make sure it was filled up properly - it was. So I decided to take a look 2 weeks ago, and it was down a quart - no problem dump some more Mobil 1 syn in - which is what I put in originally.
Then I went on a 600mile journey with my buddy that took us over Cinnamon and Engineer pass (just got back today). I checked the oil after Cinnamon pass and it was down a quart again - I bougt some oil and filled it back up. (a fair amount of high and low 4wheelin)
Where's it going? I've always checked for any type of leaks - there isn't a drop on garage floor. The area around the oil plug is dry. The exhaust doesn't show signs of ANY kind of smoke.
Should I have someone take a closer look at it?
BTW, on my journey:
Popped the positive battery cable off
Hood latch no longer holds the hood down
And got plenty of mud

i have an '87 runner that has the same prob, i was told it could be the pcv valve, but I haven't got it replaced yet. nice Runner

If it's not showing any leaks, then it has to be burning it. If the valve guides go bad it will show a puff of smoke at start up and not to much while driving. You could check for that.

Red - Thanks for the compliment
I had the PCV valve replaced about 2 months ago as well. Thanks for the idea though... maybe I will have that looked into since it started happening after I had the shop replace it.
Puddle, I will check that too!!
I'm stopping by the dealership to have them look at the hood latch - not fun when your hood pops at 65mph (and I don't trust the secondary latch). I'm gonna ask them to look at the pcv valve - of course they will give me the $1million dollar repair explanation.
Here's what I changed 2 months ago all within a weeks time:
pcv valve
oem spark plugs
oem plug wires
dist cap and rotor
fuel filter
cleaned the intake
cleaned my k&n air filter
fan/power steering/alternator belts

I'll keep you guys entertained: here's a pano shot at the top of Engineer pass. I guy in a jeep came "back" down (after barely making it up the trail) and told me and my buddy that its pretty hairy - lots of snow and mud. He couldn't make it up - but he had stock ˟˟˟˟ty tires.
I know its a big picture, I can delete it.....

how long have you been using mobil 1. i am willing to bet that is your problem. i went to mobil 1, and it was only in the truck for 1k miles. in that time it had already drank over 2 quarts. the stuff is just too thin, so i went back to semi sinthetic, and boom, oil consumtion is way down. about half quart in 3k. if a vehicle has not been run with synthetic its whole life, then its not a good idea to start at over 100k miles. the stuff is too thin and too slick. but if it has always had sythetic in it, then i have no idea where you oil is going.

Joe,
Advice noted. I will try the semi syn next time around and check out the results. And no I haven't been runnin full syn for very long (2 oil changes).

I'm going with joez's theory. In all the car and oil boards I surf, consensus is that switching from dino to synthetic beyond 75-100K is asking for problems. The syn is so good that it leaks by rings, guides and eventually gaskets. And then the extra detergent action can loosen accumulated sludge that could wind up blocking oil galleys and pickups, causing big headaches. With your time and mileage, I'd switch back to a quality dino like Castrol GTX and OEM filter with calibrated bypass valve (maybe soon) and call it good. As always, my 2¢.
