camo31"10.50" 1986 Pickup Build-Up Thread

so i figured i might as well make a build thread..because as soon as i get this motor swap done..and i start getting some more cash in..im getting as 4in ifs lift..and a 2IN body lift..the 2in. body lift will come first..because idk if i want 6in of lift..lol..will probably go with 2"BJ spacers and relax the torsion bars down for a better ride..and new leaves out back..

decided against the 350 swap..just because of the possibility of breakage..now im starting to put together a 4.3 V6..smaller..and actually close to the same HP numbers..its bored .060 over..pistons are larger than a 454 piston LOL!!!

its got ALL NEW INTERNALS in the block..and i mean EVERYTHING IS NEW except the block itself..im putting stock heads on it..with stock valves and valv springs..heads are used..i'll be cleaning them for a while..as the motor they were on was sitting for a while..the heads will have all new valves springs push rods rockers..everything..i also have a High Rise 4bbl intake for a 4.3..that any quadrajet will bolt to..idk what carb im gonna go with..but that'll be known soon..

unfortunately im probably going to have to get a new tranny..i want an R150F just because i heard they are SUPER strong..and i wanna use a toyota tranny that way i wont have to move my crossmember (hopefully *fingers crossed*)

honestly i dont think the swap will take very long..there doesnt seem to be too much involved..but i could be wrong..hardest part i think will be the exhaust...as i've heard its a REAL PAIN IN THE U KNOW WHAT!

all i want to do to it right now is get it swapped in and running..that way i can have a way to school and work

my exhaust will likely be BAD ASS though..im going to try to run a true dual exhaust..2.25 from the manifolds into two flowmaster 40's single in dual out..as in 4 tailpipes....hopefully going to be ran in front of both the rear tires..on each side..with 4 3.5" tips...i think it'll be a SWEET SOUNDING set up..lol tell me what you guys think

pics of the heads and motor to come later..will also take pics of other mods i've done..and pics of the 22R comin out..tore down..all that..lol

sounds nasty, I have the same truck, same color, same motor, except stepside. you should get the old heads machined to be on the safe side... sounds awesome though, can't wait to see pics. good luck!

ok guys....help me out here....my dad is wanting me to rebuild my 22R (my way..as in bored, with a engnbldr cam, O/S valves, all that.) rather than just swapping the 4.3 in..i want the added power of the 4.3 and personally i think it wouldnt take as long.

so far on my list of parts to buy i have

1.Tranny adapter from Downey or AA $???
2.Motor mounts from a guy on here $75
3. of course the motor $600
4. heads for the motor $100
5. rebuild kit for the Quadrajet 4bbl im guessing between $30-$50
6.2" body lift..prolly dont need it..but its cheap..lol $65

now what i need to know is stuff like fuel..what kind of pump am i going to be needing???

AC??...what do i do about that..can i use my stock compressor??? how do i mount it on the motor??

What about power steering???

how about radiators?? can i use my stock radiator?? or can i find one from a junkyard that will come close to fitting??

can i use the stock exhaust manifolds for the 4.3?? or will i have to buy the custom headers from one of the numerous companies

even though my toyota is carb'd it does still have some electrical plugs on it..what do i do about all that??

im sure i'll have to get a coil for the 4.3 too..

plugs, wires, filters,

am i missing anything???

please dont tell me to search..i tried that..and everybody on here is doing 4.3 TBI/CPI swaps...mines carb'd

help me out guys!!!!!

thought about getting a complete chevy drivetrain under there..but that would cost ALOT more..because then i have to deal with getting the stuff for one..crossmember placement..driveshafts..all that..i want to get an R150F which i probably will eventually..but that means i will still need the bellhousing!..so why not get the bellhousing now..use the stock tranny (be easy on it..i just got a ticket for speeding..im DEFINATELY gonna take it easy) if the tranny blows..throw the R150F in there..if not..wait till i have the funds and then throw the new tranny in there...right now im trying to compile a parts list and get the prices down on paper so i can show my father a roundabout number $$$$...he wants to rebuild the 22R i want the V6...so we have to compare numbers here..lol

I got my 22re rebuilt, and with 31s, I think it would have plenty of power! The 37s just weigh so much!! (I can spin em though!!!)

I dont like cross breeding...so heres a vote for rebuilt 22r!!

i think reality is setting in..with the stuff i have added up its already going to be close to $2000 just to get all the parts..lol..

im definately gonna get a new camshaft..bored .040 over, shave the head a little..maybe pick up a weber carb..

my question now is...what cam would be best????

i do mild offroading..just muddin..no rock crawlin..

the main thing i want the added power for..is speed and towing..i dont like to drive slow..right before i blew the 22R a few weeks ago..i was able to do 75-80 with relative ease...but then it blew..lol..

it took a LONG ASS TIME to get it that fast too..i want to be able to cruise past 75 easily...im not trying to race it...but if i need to get somewhere fast..i want my truck to be up to the challenge..as in if i need it to go 100mph...it needs to get there..lol..(i wont be goin that fast as i would probably crap my pants because i would not feel safe in this truck)

i do do some towing with it..usually small stuff like brush..but with this being my only truck..and me having a 1996 Nitro 884 savage (18 ft bass boat) i have to pull it with the yota..now i need power to be able to pull that at least 70mph..and i want to be able to maintain at least 45-50 up some fairly steep grades...so lots of low end GRUNT is needed..

also you know pullin it out of the water...thats no easy feat either..lol.

i want some nice HP numbers after i get this motor rebuilt...i think stock is somewhere around 100HP..and i want plenty more than that...

so anybody know what cam would fit my situation better??????

yea i think everybody has told me not to lose the ball bearing and spring..hahaha!...the assistant at the automotive class has rebuilt all kinds of hubs..from warns...aisins..ford manuals..dodge manuals..chevy manuals..he knows what hes doin..he even told me he can have them both cleaned, rebuilt, and ready to put back on within like 30mins..idk how long it takes you guys..but thats pretty damn fast..lol it'll take me a couple days..because im also going to THOROUGHLY CLEAN THEM!!!..and paint them..even thinkin about painting the hub body a color..but idk what...anyone have any ideas on colors..i know im gonna go with hammered black and hammered blue for the face of it..but i kinda want to paint the body of it now..give me some color schemes guys..i know yall have nothing better to do..LOL!

While it is best to not lose parts, don't sweat it too much. WabFab has 'em for $10 plus $1 shipping for a set.

If you want to go fast get a cam in the 268-272* range. Engnbldr's 268 is good. It doesn't start out as low but winds out a little further. Low end for towing is better served with a 260-261* cam. You have to pick one or the other. You can't have both.

damn i was wanting the best of both worlds...idk.i think the 268* RV cam will be better for me..as i would do less towing than interstate driving..lol..ok that brings me to my next question.

if i get the RV camshaft from ENGNBLDR, will i have to get RV springs too?..or can i reuse my stock springs..now remember...the head on the motor only has about 3,000 miles on it..maybe less..so the springs are still REALLY new..and arent screwed up or anything...

im not shaving the head...because then i would have to get the Adjustable cam gear and thats like $160+ just so i could take advantage of the extra compression.

i am boring the block .040 over though..getting it done in Tulsa, OK at a place called Custom motor builders or somethin similar..they are cleaning it SPOTLESS, putting new freeze plugs in, and boring it .040 over for $60 out the door...yea..i'd say thats DAMN CHEAP..haha..lol and if my crankshaft needs to be turned (which it probably will) they will do that for $25..lol..and these guys do quality work..its not the first time we've dealt with them...and i know plenty of guys who say nothing but good things about them

so as long as i can reuse my stock springs and retainers and valves...i'll be good to go!!!!..just gotta order the parts and wait for em to get here..lol..i got the block almost ready to be taken to Tulsa, all i have to take off is the head, timing cover, all that jazz, then it'll be ready..

i got my hubs off today as well!!! only took a few mins after i figured out the technique to get those damn cone washers out! BFH is my best friend

still dont know why the driver side wouldnt lock in though...didnt see anything wrong with the DS hub...it looked the same as the PS hub...kinda funny if ya ask me...and weird too..i gotta wait till monday before i can start the rebuild..as im going to throw them in the media blaster before i paint em

yes we have a media blaster at the auto shop...and yes it works wonders..lol.

i also found out i gotta get a new flywheel as mine has heat cracks in it..and its discolored...meaning its bad...and my clutch was on the rivets..(and my dad said it was just fine when he was driving it not 2 months ago..HA) guess i proved him wrong...lol hes payin for the clutch and flywheel..hahaha!!!

after i get this all back together..and start getting some funds..im going to pick up a 2" body lift for $65...then im going to start building my front bumper...

if anyone wants to know what it will resemble...look at Crolison's front bumper on his 3rd gen 4runner...im going to kinda copy his design..kinda..i'll change some stuff though..it'll be effin sweet though..then i gotta get a rear bumper fab'd up..lol

Dont laugh at him, your lucky he's payin for anything at all...i gotta buy all my own stuff if it breaks...

BTW, maybe i missed something, but if you regeared to say 4:88's that should give you a little more bottom end.

Just the 2 cents...
