'89 4Runner 3.0 3VZE Dropped Valve Seat

Just curious how common this is for the 3.0. Two years ago my rig starting make an exhaust leak type sound that got louder and louder. I could not find an exhaust leak, even did the flour on the manifold trick. Decided to do a compression check, as they sometimes lead you to the problem. #6 was a little low, 135 psi. All the rest were factory spec. Went back to #6, read zero, big goose egg. Huh? Pulled the valve cover, the valve was down, not coming back up. Huh? Sucked a valve? But it just had compression two minutes ago.

After tear down, found this:

When I pulled the plug, the seat was able to move over and pin the valve open. The amazing thing was that it did not touch the piston, very lucky.

Saved the head with an oversized seat, it has been on the road for two years.

Is this common for Toyota motors? Or did I just get lucky with a bad press fit on the seat?

Mike

I think you just got lucky. I've never heard of this happening on these motors.

Pretty much, they just blow head gaskets.
