I recently replaced the front pads and calipers. Now, a few months later and all of a sudden, I hear a clanking noise coming from my left front wheel area. I only hear it when rolling backwards (down the driveway) when I lightly tap the brake pedal. Tap-clank, tap-clank, etc. No noise when rolling forward and tapping the pedal. The noise is a "clank" as opposed to a heaver "clunk".

I pulled the wheel and checked the caliper bolts. Pulled the pads and reinserted them. Pad pins tight. Calipers do not leak. Found nothing loose or broken.

Ideas?

 

maybe check for play in the wheel

could be a control arm bushing, ball joint, wheel bearing.....

 

Did you get the pad anti-rattle springs re-installed correctly after you replaced your pads?

Yes, if you mean the piece of "tin" that is sprung between the pad pins.

The noise sounds very much like a clank between the ring and pinion in a differential. I tried jerking the jack-shaft around but could not reproduce the clank. Same with the transfer drive shaft - no discernable play. There is a bit of play between the rotor and the wheel but I don't know if this is the cause of the noise. "It wasn't there before".

The U-joints from the transfer case appear okay with no signs of rust and no play that I can detect. They have been lubed religiously. Odd that the clank only occurs when applying the brakes while rolling backwards and not forwards.

 

I get more of a clicking from the front when going in reverse, but it only happens the first and sometimes second time I press the brake, after that it no longer clicks. I've attributed it to the pad shifting from a forward position to a reverse position. I don't know if this assumption is true, but I'm hoping it goes away when I replace the pads and rotors (and possibly out of tolerance pad retainer pins) in the future.
