my power steering just started to leak badly

i look at it and cant tell where its coming from i know its up pretty high

please help me and give me an idea where it could be coming from

Mine leaked from behind the pulley

 

my pump's not leaking, but my gearbox is... started at just the pitman-shaft seal, and now the input-shaft seal joined in, and their both leaking

 

how hard is that to get to?

could you see the leak pretty easy

 

gearbox is bolted right to the frame on the driver's side (just find the piman arm, and look up ) pretty easy to swap out it looks like though

the leak, well, there's fluid pretty much everywhere, but it accumilates and is the most consentrated and drips from those two spots

 

im thinking i will just power wash my engine good and try and see the leak

what are the sensative to water things?

 

well in that area, the distributer, coil and ignitor, AFM... everything else should be fine I would imagine

but why not just hit is with some degreaser, or brake cleaner (or starter fluid would be bettter, as it wont deteriorate any other seals), that'll get it just as clean almost


oh but you have the 3.0 right?

I'm picturing things in place on a 22re

I'm not sure what's around there on the 3.0

I know the AFM's still over there

My steering gearbox leaks where the steering shaft goes in...Keeps the front of the frame from rusting and keeps the grass from growing where I park it. I have to top it off once every few months. It's a slow leak.

well then the whole driver's side frame on the front of my truck should last forever

 

First step is to tell us what side of the engine it's coming from. Driver's side would likely be seals on the steering gear, and passenger side would likely be seals on the PS pump. Other candidates are the ABS actuator on the very front passenger side and the various hoses.

You've already gotten answers about possible seals that can leak on the steering gear, but if your leak is on the passenger side, then the most likely candidate is the PS pump. If you have a leak there, unless it's just the reservoir o-ring which can be replaced without removing the pump, then you're better off re-building the whole PS pump with a new Toyota seal kit.

IF you don't fix the leak it will fry your A/c clutch. How do I know? I purchased a lemon of a 94 4runner and just dumped cash for a new rebuilt engine plus replaced alot of the engine bay. The compressor clutch was fried from the ps leak over years of leaking on prior owner. It ended also freezing the a/c pulleys too. I had all the ps hoses replaced and it fixed my leak. There was no ned for a pump rebuild or replacement. Installed new a/c compressor and now I have cold air too.
