Would it be of any help to our engines (22RE) to install an oil cooler ?, most of us are running large tires, and even though alot of us have regeared for larger tires the engine is still pushing alot of weight, and on top of larger tires most of us also have body armor and heavy bumpers, so our engines are working harder to move all the added weight. so would it be worth it to add an engine oil cooler ?.

 

As long as the oil doesn't get too cool.Go for it.Most V6's (Toyota) have them anyway.

Though I'm of the mindset that oil temp gives a good indication of how hard the engine's working- more so than relying on the coolant temp, in general you don't need one. Our engine's aren't high-rpm beasts tweaked to within inches of their lives so to speak.
If you're worried about the oil temp, install a gauge first. If you find the oil temp consistantly runs above 230F it may be something to consider. But then again, regular oil changes with an appropriate weight oil and/or using synthetic oil makes the cooler a moot point.

 

Yep, first the gauge. After installing one and seeing high temps then consider an oil cooler. Do the 22re engines have a place to put a factory cooler? If not, you can get a sandwich adapter with a thermostat bypass for the oil filter.

An oil cooler will increase the longevity between oil changes as well as the life of the engine in most cases. It increase capacity as well, which is a big plus. Why do you think big trailer rigs go 20-50k or more between oil changes? 20+ quarts & oil coolers make it a lot less hard on the oil.

 

I put an oil cooler on my 1978 280z when it had a 167,000 miles on it. The oil stayed clean, even after 2,000 miles after an oil change. It would not turn brown before the 3,500 oil changes. I used the type mt goat shows above. The oil came out, ran through a 4 pass cooler and back through the filter and into the engine. I just put a new engine in my 86 4runner and I'm thinking about putting one on it. Cars would last just about forever with these types of coolers, that's why the don't come with them. My 98 4runner has that little round cooler on the side of the block that water runs into, that's a joke to me for a cooler.
