Replace entire EGR or just the diaphragm?

Mechanic friend seems to think I have a leaky diaphragm on the EGR valve (22RE). Not sure how he tested it or came to that conclusion 'cause I wasn't around, but I do have classic EGR symptoms with rough idle after brought up to operating temps, etc. Anyhow, I see at several parts places that you can buy the entire setup ($$) or just the diaphragm (for less $$, about a third of the cost). Any reason to go full bore, or is the diaphragm the only part that can "wear out?" I'm ignorant, enlighten me...

PS- If the rest of the truck is any indication, it's probably the original EGR.

you could do the diaphragm but the rod, etc may have wear or other issues so, it's up to you.
