I've taken mine off as its always hitting bushes. What have you guys done? Bought new antenna? Cut it off halfway or simply gone without the AM band?

 

my power antenna is broke so i unplugged it shoved it down to about a foot still works pretty decent

 

wheres the fuse so it doesnt go up or down?

Mine goes up even when my ipod is plugged in (my stereo has a cable just for ipods, the data cable) and its really annoying it doesnt go down unless i turn the stereo off.

^ Can you clarify that for me please. When we bought our 4Runner the radio wasnt working. It was unplugged. I noticed that there was two antenna cables that go into the radio. Kinda stumped me for a second, but I didnt pay any mind to it.

On my pioneer decks theres the cable on the back right of the radio when your looking at the deck from the front.

You've lost me, where's this rear antenna and what purpose does it served if its not already plugged into the radio? Is it one of those newfangled in-glass antennii? If there is infact a second antenna, that's awesome!

Also, do you think the thread on the antenna is a common (but small) bolt size? I want to plug the hole so crap doesn't get in there.

 

Wasnt that little antenna to boost the signal in the city or something?


Anyways, my truck never had one. The PO said somebody stole it, but it looks like it broke at the mount. If I ever find one at a wrecker I will yank it.

My girlfriends always comes loose, so I just remove it when we wheel it.

 

Yup, if you look at your rear quarter panel glass (passenger side on mine) you should see a little black line running the perimeter of the glass and then a little connection leading behind the trim.
On both of my runners I fixed any problems with the antenna then put in an inline switch so I could keep the antenna down and have good reception. Raised it when hit the highway and reception was fading.

 

Most companies that cater to street rods will sell hidden antennas such as this. There are cheaper ones than this though. Google or maybe EBAY hidden antenna and you'll find many.

Tubby.....that Pioneer, and all aftermarket decks, are not set up for "diversity" antennas. Some stock radios takes that system. I doubt that even if the rear antenna was in tact, that you would get better radio reception that a coathanger would provide in the mountains. The rear antennas are only to fill the gap that an overpass, bridge, etc. may create from the main(front) antenna.

If you pull the fuse for the power ant. feed, I believe it runs on the same circuit that will kill your dome light as well. Better off putting a manual toggle on that line and apply power when you wantt o raise it and switch it off when you wish to lower it.

 

Can I get some more info on this rear glass antenna, specifically, the wiring it up to the radio. My truck doesn't have a collapsible antenna, just a screw-in tree magnet.
I'll check out that hidden antenna. I don't like the antenna whipping around bouncing off the windshield when i drive though bushes.

 

Those hidden antennas look pretty good and would be a good substiute to the front whip

 

Yeah, I just unscrew mine too. On the 4Runner, I installed the switch to pull it back down. My Brother found a short, ~13", rubber antenna at an parts store and put it on his Bronco. Maybe you could find something similar.

My after market whip antennae sticks out at a weird angle, but i really never minded it.
A good friend of mine got it for me as a present, he was tired of listening to my rap cd's

In this one its not at such a radical angle, and im sure I could have adjusted it, too much other stuff to justify adjusting the antennae..

 

why not take it out and install a window antenna?

 

put mine up on the roof, this one's from a Ford us or Merc Cougar - about 18" long and flexy at the mount - the factory antenna wire is long enough on my 1st gen, but I had to get an adapter because the ford antenna end is smaller than the standard antenna end. if you want to mount it further back on the roof I would suggest a VW style.

 

Where's all the CB whips?

I was thinking of pulling out the electric antenna on my runner and putting my 4ft. Firestik there.. and going with no radio.

The back window antenna would be perfect to hook up! That's so cool. I noticed the 2 antenna plugs when putting in a new deck too.

I might take the entire stock antenna off and throw the firestik on the back bumper with a quick release and that would make everything look really smooth because nothing would stick out!

I had one of those on my pickup. The reception is really poor unless you live in a big city, close to the radio transmitters.
