On-board air on a 3rd Gen (Pictures)
Finally got my OBA setup in full gear today. Well, sort of. I'm still waiting for my 3 gallon tank.
I have had the MV-50 compressor from Pep Boys for a while, and now finally hardwired it to the Viair pressure switch and mounted it in the engine bay.
I ended up taking out the cruise control actuator to make room. I never used the cruise control, and would rather have a compressor out of the elements. I just drilled two holes and fastened with nuts, and used some rubber bushings to settle down vibrations.
Rather than spending $75 on the Viair 2 gallon tank, I went with the 3 gallon tank for $33 here: http://www.kmwperformance.com/product/CT3GT.aspx. Its only 8" wide so it should fit nicely near the frame rails...
Here are some pictures to give you an idea on what I did. The switches are from here: http://www.4x4mods.com/Product/Jeep/...rswitch40.html

Also, I have a 50' air line coil with a clamp on tire chuck... Works very well. Very impressed.

I have a 93 and I mounted my tank just behind the rear dif. Had to shim my spare tire a little. I have two gauges (not in this pic), left one for tank preassure and the right is for bag preassure. I know yours is different but just some ideas.

Looks like you could almost get a second tank on the other side as well. From working with compressed air a lot i can tell you that a 3 gallon tank is ok but really won't last very long. then you will have to depend on the pump for air.
If you mounted 2 of them together, 6 gallons should just about get all 4 tires back up to road pressure without having to use the pump or at least not having to wait as long since you have 35's. i know i have a 5 gallon tank that i keep in the garage, when pumped up to 100psi it will just about get all 4 of my tires pumped up.
If you had 6 gallons and bumped up the pressure to whatever the max on the tank is (usually 125 or 150) that should just about get your tires done.

The angle is deceiving. It takes up more than 2/3 the distance between rails.
I have dual Viar 480's. When I run both it doesn't take long at all to fill a tire after crawlin. I now have a quick release fitting where the drain is in the pic for attaching a hose.

I've never timed it, but, I would estimate from 15 psi to 40 psi for all 4 tires is about 20 minutes?

Well once you get over a point, the improvment in MPG is marginal at best.
Best way to see what you should run is to dot he chalk test, use chalk to make a line across the tie and then drive a little way and see how the chalk rubbed off. You want it to run off even. You can add a PSI or 2 to whatever that number is but after that you start losing any savings on MPG with the extra tire wear.
I know, i once ran my car at 30psi, got 28mpg, then at 50psi and got 29.X then at 35 and got 29mpg. As you can see, you get soem improvment in that first little bit, after that it takes a lot for very little.

very cool --both of your setups.
I like that strapless look to the tank James-what exactly holds that tank up there if I could ask sir? very custom look I have not quite seen that before, most come off so jerry rigged or whatever the expression is...jury rigged?
James thanks very much your donation to Mary fundraiser with the decals- I got mine promptly and could not ask for better service.

I cut the stirrups down as short as they could go. Installed speed nuts and mounted the screws from the top under the carpet. I'll look to see if I have any pics of install.

Nice. Looks great. Just got my Viair 450C and waiting on a tank and fittings. Want to sell that cruise control setup? I would love to get that from you. I'd need the controller and actuator. I can source my own control switches.
