I have had my 4runner for about a year now, and need new tires. Currently I have the stock 265/70/16 size. Today, I looked under the truck and saw that the spare tire is 275/70/16. Using the Miata tire size calculator, I found that the height is .6 of an inch taller. I know that this is no problem in terms of height, but what about width? Rubbing, mounting on stock rims, etc. Search yields results about height, not width. I figure my options are to go with the 275 size to match the spare, or have one of my current tires mounted on the spare rim. However, my current tires are showing a small amount of dry rot. I am going on a long trip soon, and need info. Thanks in advance

 

275 is the width. Both of those tires are 275 mm (10.8 inches)wide. They are both 70 series tires, which means that the sidewall is 70% the treadwidth or 192.5 mm (7.6 inches)for the 275 and 185.5 (7.3 inches)for the 265.

So your calculator is correct in determining that there is a .6 inch difference in height between the two tires. There is a 10 mm difference in width.<---edited because I'm stupid.

Get which ever size you want and know that it doesn't make much of a difference either way.

 

The spare is a 275 and the other 4 are 265 series. Meaning the spare is 275mm wide and the other 4 are 265mm wide. Not much of a difference but they are not the same width.

Personally I would get 4 new 275/70/r16 if possible (the choices are less plentiful in that size). If you can't find that size in a tire you like then just get 4 of the stock 265/70/r16 and keep the spare you have. It won't hurt anything it terms of height or width to run it, as long as you have open differentials. If you have the factory rear locker, always run your spare up front and you won't have any issues.

 

Yea- I am an idiot. 10 mm difference in width.

 

Since you said your current tires are showing signs of dry rot, I'd buy to match your spare

 

Thanks for the advice. I do have the rear locker. So if I have a flat on the rear with stock size tires, I need to swap the rear flat for one of the fronts, then put the spare on the front? Yeah, choices in 275/70 size are much less plentiful.

 

Buy 4 new 265/70R16 if that's easier to find and keep the best of your old ones for a spare. Then you'll have all 5 the same size.

 

Buy whatever tire size you want. If you need to use the spare, stay in 2wd & DON'T use the E-locker. The slight size difference will be fine for temporary use.

Ah, finally some thought. However if your tires as of right now are in really poor shape, then you can always ask the tire shop if they have any takeoffs in good shape in the back. Typically they will throw it in for free, or at least cheap, if you purchase the new tires from them.

 

Or buy 5 new tires and rotate them once a year, including rotating in the spare
