My clutch is going bad in my 1992 Toyota 4Runner.

I have researched and talked to friends and some clutches they told me are good are:

ACT
Centerforce
Marlin Crawler

I am really rough on my clutch.
I want something that isn't going to crap out after I give it hell.
I am an agressive driver on the road and off, so you can imagine that this clutch will take a beating.

I am debating whether it is really worth it to spend extra money on these performance clutches or spending a fraction of the price on an OEM replacement.

I was wondering what you guys would think.

So, should I get an ACT, Centerforce, or Marlin Crawler clutch, or just do an OEM replacement?

The reason those heavier duty aftermarket clutches are recommended is because they've been proven to hold up under abuse more so than a stock clutch....OEM or OEM style replacement.

It's worth it.

 

ok. thats good to hear because I didn't want to spend the extra money to get a clutch that wasn't worth it.

I'm considering the Super Heavy Duty Marlin Crawler clutch and throw on a new flywheel while I'm at it.

That's the 1600lb'r right? justa22re.......aka Allan....has one. Likes it a lot. You'll be happy. Grabs real well.

 

Yeah its the 1600lbs. one. Its only like $50 more than the 1200lbs. one I think. So I figured I'd go all out.

I'm gunna get one and try it out and I will say what I think on this thread or a different one.

Buy the Marlin Crawler HD unit. Not the super HD unit. I run the 1200ft-lb (HD) version (and so do many other members). Its one of the best clutches I have ever used. Pedal feels light just like stock, but it grabs like a mofo!

The super HD unit is ceramic I think. I know a bunch of marlincrawler employees recomended against the Super HD and steered people to the HD kit.

So, going by what you said in the previous post, the 1600lbs. Marlin Crawler Clutch would have a stiffer clutch pedal?

Also Marlin Crawler makes the Super Heavy Duty in the Semi-Metallic and not just the ceramic.

^^^That's what I was going to say. [Jay] Allan got the super HD in the semi metal. I thought it was ceramic only until he corrected me.

The super HD WILL definitely have a stiff pedal, if you didn't realize. The HD/1200lb'r feels stiffer than stock to me, but not by much. Great for daily drivers that also go offroad. Or, towing trailers and hauling weight. It also grabs real well.

 

oh ok.. Yeah that makes perfect sense that the 1600lbs one would be stiffer.

Well, seems like I have some investegating to do. I know a guy who has the Super HD in his 1st gen. so maybe I will ask if I could give his a test drive.

I don't have a built rig so maybe the 1200lbs. would be better for me. I use my 2nd gen mostly for road use and I go on the trails that I can handle when I have time, which hasn't been much lately because I can't clear 3ft. of snow. lol.

When I installed my 1200lb marlin clutch, I honestly noticed such a small change in pedal stiffness. It honestly feels almost like stock. And yes, it grabs real well!

And besides guys, the clutches on our trucks are SOFFFFT! Last time I drove my buddys ranger (with a ceramic clutch) I nearly wore my leg off!

But I DD my truck, and I flog on it off road. This clutch is great, never had it slip on me one bit!
Go with the 1200lb version and pick up a shifter seat and bushing (do it!!). Those two little peices of plastic will make your shifter feel like brand spankin new.

 

Me neither......had it slip, that is. Well, except once when I had a very, very heavy trailer more suited for a one ton. But, hey......it's a 4cyl.

Seat and bushing = very good suggestions, too.

I've driven two Ford trucks in the past. Both had very stiff clutches from the factory <<<!!!. Didn't care for them. Once you got past the point that the clutch plate was disengaged, it was okay. But, up until.....I didn't like it. My neighbor, Bob (real live country boy from Missouri), who has nothing against Toyotas, but not necessarily an addict.....like us.....drove my 4rnr once. "I'll take it!!", was all he had to say about that.
