87 pre-runner/sand rail build

Hey guys I found a 1987 ext cab 22ret/5 speed/2 wheel drive that is rusted to crap in the body but runs..... sort of. I was thinking to build a baja type sand truck and have no idea how to go about it. I haven't bought it yet (1200$) due to the fact that the turbo makes a grinding sound when you rev it up past 2200rpms (along with the motor being covered in oil and little pieces of rubber and bearings) and it refuses to idle at all. That and the frame has some serious holes in it. But I was thinking that if I could rebuild the motor and turbo and patch the frame I could make a "prerunner" out of it with a locker in the rear (Aussie) and maybe some progressive suspension in the front to handle the sand. I always thought paddle tires looked neat on a sand rig.

Thoughts?

not worth 1200 if its as bad as you say it is. I'd offer 500, maybe 600. Not more. You can get a toyota truck that runs great and doesn't have much rust for around 1500 in most places.

yeah i definately wouldnt buy that, it sounds like that turbo is totaly tanked which probably destroyed most of the head aswell, and with the rust issues and whatnot its surely not worth it. I would just follow the above posters info and buy a good running pickup and start from there.
