Exhaust questions

98 4Runner

Got a Vortex muffler installed with 2.5" piping going back to an oversized tailpipe (mistakes all around) at a muffler shop. This probably cost me a total of $200.

It was too loud and obnoxious, so I wanted to get it all removed. Dealership said itd be $850 to replace what I had gotten put in. Not happening.

So I too it to a muffler shop and got just the muffler replaced back down to a generic muffler (close to stock 4Runner muffler). They left the oversized piping and oversized tailpipe on, and the system is still fairly loud.

Would dropping the piping back down to 2" (isn't that what stock piping is for 98 4runner?) and putting in a normal tailpipe make it quieter/back to what it was before aftermarket install?

Thanks for the help.

Stock pipe size is a metric equivelent to 2.25".
