Basically all I need to know is if it matters if the transfer case is mated to an auto or manual.

If I swap to a manual will I need to modify my x-member and get a new transfer case?

I'm doubting the transfer case...but I probably will have to modify the cross member.

just but a complete transmission and transfercase unit already together from the junkyard or some one local.

The transfercases ARE different.

Use the X-member from the manual transmission, whenever you buy the tranny just grab that and you will need to use it.

You will need a transmission/T-case combo. The tcase in your automatic wont mate to 5spd tranny. Plus the shifter on you auto tcase is like a lever type when the shifter on the 5spd case is just another shifter out the top of the case. And the Tcase for your auto is chain driven and the 5spd case is gear driven wich would make a difference. Not sure about the Xmember though, probably need the one from the 5spd donor. Best bet is to get a complete donor truck and just swap it straight across since you need the ecu and all that stuff anyways and it would get confusing if you just take it out and have it in a big pile.

 

don't forget you will also need the drive shafts the pedal box ass. clutch master and lines on top of all the stuff mentioned above, your best bet is to buy a complete donor truck

Just sell your auto and and buy a 5 speed. Waste of time IMO trying to swap. How much $$ is your time worth? I know I am worth about $45 an hour. Do the math.

 

To swap from a auto to manual, you need the ecm or ect ? I have an 88 (3. don't know yet) that has a bad auto tranny and a 92 complete doner t100 with an r150f. I did not know I needed to swap computers..... Do I ?

You need the ECU, the brain, from the manual vehicle. Or figure out how to trick your current ECU into thinking your car is in neutral or park all the time.

 

please disregard stagger lee. It is every bit worth swapping in a different transmission. i gathered all the parts i need for about $700 and took my dad, brother, and me one saturday to complete. It has been every bit worth it.

I was getting 15mpg with the auto and it was slow as hell with 33s and 5.29s.
Now I am getting 21mpg with the manaul and 33s and 5.29s.

it is very easy to trick the ecm. Splice the 2 big wires in the large white plug on the passenger side of the tranny together and the truck will think it is in N.

Not everyone is as mechanical as you or I, or good at finding parts for that matter. I'm a junkyard cowboy. But I must admit, I was unaware it was that easy to fool the ECU. Thanks! Takes a bit of trouble out of the swap, eh?

 

Yeah, you just need to bypass the neutral start switch, much like you would bypass the clutch safety switch.

Other than that, the ECUs are very similar. The A/T just has a few extra signals for the transmission computer.

Their not that bad. Its more power/gearing issue, and mileage loss. Sure will be getting farther then with 2wd though!

My 3slow auto always felt like it was looking for the right gear. Sucked.

Roger that! Go for it dude. It all makes sense now. You can do anything, its just a matter of how long it takes. Im OCD, so everything takes me forever because I start cleaning everything and get sidetracked and forget about the job at hand. Besides with yota tech you can accomplish anything.
