Help me put a price on a 1985 4runner

It's for sale locally (North Carolina) and I want to see what you guys think is a fair price.

300,000+ miles

1985 4runner SR5
5 speed
Fatory sunroof, cruise, altimeter, etc.
Power windows - all work including the back one
No rust on the L brackets for the removable top.
Moderate rust on front fenders, left rear quarter is rusted pretty bad around fenderwell, right rear is solid.
Solid frame, no rust.
Gas door still working

4wd works fine and it fires right up and runs fine. Owner said it runs a little hot, but nothing too bad. It's his DD right now. Overall it's pretty straight and solid for 23 years old, would clean up fine.

He's asking $2900, what would you offer?

$3k for a rusted high mileage truck huh? 1500-2k at most. Plus it "runs a little hot"? What is that about?

I agree, I paid $1800 for a completely rust free 84, with 200K that runs like a top. I still am going through everything, bushings, gaskets, etc. It doesn't even leak or burn a drop of oil, but for my peace of mind I am going through her completely. That costs money.

I have spent about $600 in the last 2 weeks collecting maintenance parts. Put new brakes all around, full gasket set, radiator, electric fan, belts, motor mounts, all fluids changed and flushed in tranny, diffs, etc.

Runs a little hot means he overheated it at least once already. I paid $1000 for a running 85 ext cab that needed rear brakes with burnt paint and a few dents. $2000 tops but from your description more like $1200 or so.

Sounds like he is trying to put a price on sentimental. Doesn't work like that.

Thanks for the response guys. I knew it was high, but I wasn't sure by how much. I'll probably offer him around 1800-2000 and he'll probably decline, but that's okay too. He's well aware that people go for the 85's.

Thanks again.

Resurrecting an old threat here I suppose, same question as the OP:

1985 4runner SR5
210k original miles on the engine
2nd owner
4x4
5 speed manual
Original SFA
Bikini top and sunroof with some wear and tear on the outside

He's asking $2k, should I bite or try to talk him down?

Makes me laugh how people want a fortune for these 85 especially were I live. Talked to a chick with an 85 4 runner recently. it wasn't running very well needed a bunch of maintenance and she wouldn't budge off of 4 grand I told her I wanted some of whatever she was smoking haha. 2k not bad though if its in decent shape.

I'd still try to talk them down though people need to get there head out of the clouds with these Toyota trucks everyone seems to think they are solid gold and just run forever. But I for one know from experience your rig won't make it to 400k without some love.

Ended up being a total nightmare, and he wouldn't budge of 2k... I nearly burst out laughing when asking questions about it and him staying firm at 2k. I mean seriously, oil leaks, exhaust leaks a good amt of body damage and binding in the drivetrain while in neutral? C'mon man

I believe it, I was surprised when I was in the market for a tin top samurai a couple years ago. Anything under $2500 was a wreck, and really clean ones were selling for close to what they were new.

I don't think the first gen 4runners are as rare but at some point the value stops going down, and on a vehicle this old the value can go up as it becomes harder to find. The first gen 4runners are a pretty popular model and especially with the solid axle.
