I'm about to pull my engine out and I'm wondering if it would be easier to break the drive shaft nut loose before pulling it out, or wait until I pull out the engine.

I thought about using the starter method.

you mean the crankshaft? If it is a manual trans, you could put in high gear with parking brake on to break it loose.

 

the starter trick works great while the engine's still in.
once the engine's out, an impact is the best way.

 

Thank you Alex, yes I mean the crank shaft.

I'll try to do it the manual while in gear method. I'm nervous at using the starter method now I have the throttle body off and fuel lines open.

 

FYI All,
I ended up using the starter trick. Had to unfuse the EFI (for the gas pump), remove all cables to from the distrbuter and hook up the battery again. One click of the key, a loud crack of the breaker bar hitting the cross member and I have a free nut.

A simple way would be just to pull the wire off the coil.
