you have a couple choices, if the head is just warped pull it off and take it to a machine shop to get milled or if you bought a late 22r 1985+ put in in your 4runner and swap all the efi stuff on to it. 22r is carbed 22re is fuel injected. and welcome to YT

What did you buy? A Long Block or a Short Block?

If it's a rebuilt motor you need to transfer all your old parts off your engine I.E. Intake, Alt., Starter, Ex. Manifold, etc.

So you may have got a 22RE motor. If you didn't I would talk to the company that sold it to you, because most companies charge more for 22RE motors compared to 22R motors.

To convert to a 22R could be a huge pain, that means getting a Carb Linkage etc, from a Junkyard. Unless the new motor came with all that?

are you going to be able to use a 22r? If you'r asking then you might rethink what your getting into.

Seriously... if you're diving into motor swaps, you shouldn't be asking if you can swap in a 22r in place of a 22re. You're in for a lot more problems if you're that uneducated. Are you really ready to tackle what you've got?

22R's are far simpler than 22re's.. the swap is much "simpler" than 22r to 22re. You would need to get the proper throttle cable from a junkyard but as far as wiring goes, you could rig a 22r without finding a 22r oem rigs wiring. Since 22r's don't require any ECU's... Just gas/air and spark.

I'll throw out some free advice... get the 22re working, you wasted your money and time getting a 22r... and its even more troubling that you incidentally got a 22r instead of a 22re.... Maybe it was an honest overlook or maybe you're just not sure what your doing?

man and im not usually a dick.

The 22r longblock should bolt in directly and substitute nicely for the 22re. Actually, it will. I'm in the process of putting an 88 22r engine in my 91/22re truck, retaining the EFI from the 91.
If the 22r is 86+ (or possibly mid/late 85), there is little difference between the two: valve covers may be different, you'll need to block off the 22r's fuel pump mount (use the blocking plate from the 22re), though not necessary, you can use the distributor drive gear from the 22re on the 22r and lose the fuel pump eccentric.
