OK the truetracs got me through ALOT of places that open diffs wouldnt deam of yesterday including 1.5' of silt on rutted hill climbs and off camber stuff. This pic is with the back of the 4runner sitting flat on the ground and the wheel dropped out trying to get a bite! Notice the front not spinning!!! I did figure out the break thing, had to crank the wheel to the left as the drvr side front was airborn and pressed the break while accelerating and thats the only reason it mobbed out!!! So I am pleased as to the workings of them, lifted tires suck but the break press does help.
I am tearing down the ADD system right now to find the reason for the loud snap and loss of 4x4.

looking at that sand.... any chance that you've lost one of the vac lines to the ADD?

 

That's what I asked him in one of his other threads on the same issue. I just removed my ADD system (actually the whole diff, but got rid of everything else) and I was surprised how much there was to it.

Can't tell in the pics, but are you missing your front skidplate? If so, I'd definately be checking all those vaccuum lines, don't forget the hard lines on the front of the diff.

They are similair tread to their cousins the cooper stt (made in the same place by cooper). I had these siped and I can vouge that they ROCK in snow and ice when siped. They are amazing in the white stuff.

 

Yep! That would do it. Congrats on finding it, bummer on the breakage. How hard were you on the throttle when you applied the brake to get it to lock up?

 

I was high centered and didnt realize it was spinning when I slapped the breaks and accelerated! OOOOPS!

OK got my parts today, had to swap shocks on a guys parts runner to his runner. In return I got the whole front axle diff asembley, both half shafts and rotors. Ill swpa the stuff over tomorrow and get it back up to par! Worked out pretty well thanks to craigslist and peeps parting vehicles!

 

As far as getting unstuck if it hadntn for the front TT I would have been stuck with the back laying flat on the wall of the wash. It was to the back tires and laying completely on it like it was as shelf. The fronts with the brakes on and turned are what pulled me off it!
I can see a place for lockers without a ?, its just nice to know the TT's were not a waste of money!

 

Except that a TT still lets the wheel off the ground spin up to 2x and then breaks stuff when it hooks up ...

 

I don't think it it would be any different from open in that situation. Brake torquing is tough on the drivetrain, but with my 31"s I don't think it will be an issue.

I want a Truetrac as I go through lots of deep snow on fishing trips in the fall/ winter/ spring where I can't just take another line. With rocky/ uneven stuff, I can usually pick another line and make it through open front (rear's already locked). Now with the ability to alter tire pressure to the conditions, it does much better over rocks than before.

 

Probably right as to what snapped the stub, I should stop the wheels completely before brakiing and accelerating.

No, it's not - it's exactly the same as open - that's my point. I doubt this breakage would have happened with a true locker.

Actually, come to think of it, it may be WORSE than open due to the bias ratio, which acts as a torque multiplier in this instance.
