94 3VZE 4Runner

When the engine's warmed up, at around 2,000-2,500 rpm, there is a ticking noise that comes from the driver's side of the engine. It only happens when I have the gas pedal partially pushed down, trying to maintain speed. If I let off the pedal, it stops; if I push harder and the RPM's go up, it stops. Its a pretty loud tick, and is definitely audible in the cab as well as outside the cab.

Maybe valve tapping, exhaust reed, gremlins?

What do you all think?

timing chain maybe? Have you checked your guides lately?

 

3vze has a belt.

Could be lifters or some say fuel injectors.

My truck does the exact same thing.

 

yep, that's a difference between the 22 and the 3.slo.

 

That and gas mileage. Not power though.

Most likely it is valve tap, the lifter are solid. My 92 does the same thing, I need to adjust the valve lash. After I adjusted the valves on my old 89 it was very quiet, except for evenly ticking fuel injectors (much quieter than the ticking valves before the adjustment).

 

i just figure that its the injectors ticking... valves are all adjusted properly...
just chalk it up to a 3.0 issue that iwll never go away... lol...

 

My friend had the same problem....he eventually found a small exhaust leak near the manifold, or at it, i can't remember. But, after he fixed that, the ticking sound was reduced significantly.

I know that isn't fixing the real problem...or at least that is what my common sense tells me. But these 3.0's all have a slight tick, or at least it's real common.

Just something else to look at.

 

i have about the same noise wile i am driving but it only does it only when the clutch is in gear, but if i just push the clutch pedal in and rev to the same place it does not do it any more

 

my truck has something very similar. It haopens in the same range and its on the drivers side. If i pull the #2 plug wire off while running it goes away completly. Try that on the drivers side and see if it helps. I thought it was rod knock but it was very sporadic and has slowly progressed over the last 1500 miles. A rod would have gone by now I thought. I havent tried to adjust the valves yet though. My other thought was piston slap (possible broke a small piece of the skirt off or wrist pin walk (not sure if these are press or c-clip least likely answer but havent researched it yet.) Let me know what you come up after you pull the wires 1 at a time. I would like to find the problem so i can fix it.

 

this is crazy. my rig's doing the same thing. everyone says lifters, i was afraid of nods rocking. how do you go about fixing this freaking annoying tap?

 

probably just your injectors, they tend to tic under load. you shouldhear mine when I'm climbing a mountain.

 

i know injector tick and like the OP it says its at a constant throttle...Just keeping the truck at a constant speed...and I can make mine do it in neutral and have tried scoping the engine and it sounds like it echos through out the entire engine so i have not been able to diagnose it that way.

Actually, that's usually how a rod-knock comes on. First, a light tap at lower RPM, progressively getting louder, and continuing higher up into the RPM range, as the bearings slowly eat themselves.

In your case, do a valve adjustment first.

To the OP, if you can ge someone to hold on the gas when it's ticking, try using a long screwdriver, or stethescope to localize the noise.

 

The tick/knock was real quiet and just about always in the same RPM band as the original post.

 

gah... mines LOUD!!! i just need another vehicle so that i can take the injectors out and get em cleaned...

 

Quick update...since I have a 35k mile motor sitting in my garage I have been driving the snot out of my rig pulling 6k RPM every chance I get (gas mileage sucks) But I figured for science I would do this. I swear the noise is getting quiter and less freq. I am starting to wonder if maybe a lifter was clogged and not able to pressurize with oil. What do you think? So I am gonna run an engine flush through the motor and see what happens. I am still having issues believing its a fuel injector. When I scoped the motor it echoed throughout the motor.
